First hunt of 2012 - muzzleloading...
« on: October 01, 2012, 03:46:58 AM »
Went this morning. Public land, an little piece I scounted with my 8 y/o daughter a few days ago. Walked in hour before light - knew roughly where I was... up a tree... once I got up I could see light from pasture. Very light drizzle. Heard a shot at about 7:10am, waaaay off. At 7:15 saw silohette of deer fifty-sixty yards out - too dark, and he was moving briskly. Didn't shoot. rain got heavier and heavier, by 8:30am it was getting really wet, so i came down. Walked out carrying climber, buck jumped up 10 feet in from of me as I climbed over fallen logs. We looked at each other, I slipped safety off as he bounded out. I didn't even try; walked a few more yards - it's raining - and found three scrapes within sight of each other.
good morning. I'll be back tonight or tomorrow AM..

Season is off to a good start. Shot a modest spike on monday evening, and then a much bigger 4pt/cowhorn this morning. I'm done for a few days. Evening deer was hit a ways back, ran a bit... but recovered. The bigger one this morning was double-lunged at 35 yards, went nine yards. Both public land deer. A grand start to 2012. Load was 240 grain XTP - one of those cheap .452 bullets packaged by TC - on top of 90gr Pyrodex RS.

You must be in the eastern zone. On the 19th, i shot a spike and on the 20th my son shot a big spike done at PEEDEE on a draw hunt. I LOVE this time of year. didnt see anything yesterday due to all the wind from Sandy.

I hit it all day yesterday too Scratch and agree, the wind held em down. I heard one close shot in the AM that sounded like a musket cap misfire, heard a definite discharge at dusk, coulda been someone just packing up to go home. Usually i'll hear 5+ shots on our central region(n.c.) opener. I'm hoping things will calm down next week when this huge cold front hits.  J

scratchmark & jonnyreb - yep, eastern zone (barely, western edge Wake). Didn't hunt this weekend - have my girls with me - working on Monday, hope to get out Tues. The freezer is filling. The 30-30 has been out, but I'll tell you... I just love the muzzloader. light, fantastic trigger, and if I do my part, absolutely deadly. Only thing is, if no wind, can't see which way the deer ran (but they don't run too far)
