Couldn't find nor afford the real thing, so I found a couple of reproductions.........

Both H&R....Calvary and Officers Model.

I found a Calvary Model on Gun America last year and I am using it to hunt with here in Alaska.  Shoots real nice, and has a punch using the low level loads for the trapdoor.  I still want an Officers model with that tang site.

Very nice. I am building a Officer model now on a Springfield 1873. I got the stock from Fajen about 20 years ago. I was cleaning the shop the other day and I ran across the unfinished project. 26-t

My dad bought two when they were new consecutive serial numbers, I have one brother has the other, 100 year anniversary models his is unfired I do shoot mine.

To make the officers model even more "correct", I bought a "Beach" front sight and a wood pistol grip from Dixie Gun Works. I also found a period correct rear barrel sight that I'll install.

Took them out shooting and they are both VERY accurate. 405 Lee cast from pure lead over 65g of Black powder is the answer.

Beautiful rifles!  I once had an original trap-door, and wish I'd kept it.  :'(
 
With a dry wool wad between the powder and bullet, I can only get about 60 grns of 3F into the case (no drop tube, slight compression), but that seems to do the job....

What type of rear sight did you put on the cavalry model?  (The H&R original is a very simple buckhorn type.)
