 I could not help but notice that with just less wad I could get 2 oz. in a 10ga 2 7/8, instead of a 3 ˝ inch shell same powder charge and a good roll crimp. When fired I did not notice a dissimilar recoil between the two. (12 000 buckshot) and it cheaper, less wads and a cut down used 3 ˝ to roll crimp. Any reason they only state 3 ˝ inch shells for this load or am I missing something.

well im by no means a expert in shotgun shell reloading, have done it a lot but stuck to published loads for a particular shell. the prob with shotshells is that you are useing shotgun powder. a very sensitive and fast burning powder.a small increase in shot weight per same amount of powder can cause more pressure and you are dealing with the less forgiving powder and thinner barrels and chambers than you are with a rifle.the 3 and 3.5 in guns are prob rated for more pressure.
im sure sum guys with more experience will chime in and let yu know what they think.
 
larger shot like buck has more airspace in the load and is easier to git by with modified loads cuz the charge weighs less than one would think

As noted, pressures are probably going to be different. Basically, you are making up a load. How much do you know about what is going on inside that hull when you fire it? Stick with the load book and tested combinations.

Ya know I'm new to shot shell loading too, but the first and primary info I got was to stick with load book data and proven loads,,
 that shot shell is not like cartridge loading,,
 

and it cheaper, less wads

So you really need to save a few penny's on each shot?

Well obviously not yet, but keep it up and you may well be missing something,
like fingers, an eye, or part of your face,, let alone a perfectly good and functioning shotgun

In shotshell everything has to fit at the right height to get a proper crimp. I have loaded slugs in 2 3/4 hulls and 3" with same powder charge. Only thing I do different between the to is add two more. 125 nitro cards in 3" hull versus the 2 3/4.
