Out here in Oregon everyone feels the need to carry everywhere or their life is at risk. I call that paranoid!

I have home owners insurance and fire extinguishers at home... does that make me paranoid?

Or does the fact that I carry every time I leave the house mean I'm paranoid?   Not sure I see much difference.

I have found those who call others paranoid often lack the desire or ablity to protect themselves and depend on govt. to do it for them. Often they try to shame others to do the same in a effort to make themselves feel better about their lack of nerve and ablity . Not saying this is the case here just saying it has been true in most other cases I have seen.

Just found out that we are voting on a new legislature in Nov. that, if passed, will loosen the reins on gun restrictions here. Supposedly it will be stated that is is un-constituional to restrict a ones right to bear arms in any shape or form. If passed there may no longer be a permit requirement to conceal carry. It will also open up the restricions on where one can, or cant, carry a firearm. It will state that it is an individuals un-disputed right to carry a weapon for self defence. Really makes me want to wait until Nov. before spending the money.

Evidrine, I think you are mistaken about what the amendment will do.  It will protect our rights more than they are protected now, but it does not mean there will be no permit system required.  It will make banning CC and other forms of keeping arms much less likely and would require another amendment.

Check out Louisiana Shooters Association info on this and what Dan Zelenka say on it.

I freely admit that I'm insecure and paranoid.  Can't help it.  Need guns and lots of ammo.

Well if you travel to Washington state you can get a Washington State CPL and if you travel to Arizona you just put the gun in your pocket and you are good to go.  Other states may be the same.  Larry

BOSSIER CITY, La. -  Senate Bill 303 was just passed by the House on Thursday.
If it makes it to the ballot in November, Louisianians will vote on whether to amend the state's constitution.
Possibly giving it the strongest gun ownership rights in the country. The bill, which was authored by Senator Neil Riser, will define the right to keep and bear arms as a fundamental right.
It also rids the constitution of language that allows the banning of concealed firearms. That will give you the right to carry a gun almost anywhere.

I still don't think it will.  It can still be regulated and/or taxed.

That's not modern! It has a cylinder rather than a slide and doesn't carry nearly enough rounds for effective spray and pray.  ::) ;D

I don't have a dog in this fight, but I would be very leery about this if it removes the entire permit / licensing system.  Ky has open carry, and by permit and training offers CCDW.  Concealed Carry Deadly Weapons permit specifically allows carry / possession of every weapon a human could conceal, with the exception of explosives.  Without the permit, you can openly carry a firearm, but it is still illegal to have a knife with a blade over 5" in length on your person in public.  Read the law carefully before voting for it.

I think many confuse being paranoid with being smart and I agree with Shootall too. Many seem to mask their own insecurity by criticizing those willing to take the steps to be self suficient and who choose not to rely on others to do what in reality only they can do themselve's.  I look at carrying as having serious life insurance. Here it is now legal to carry while bow hunting if you have a Carry Permit. Concidering we have bear, cougars, and our fair share of two legged varmints a firearm just might come in handy. I don't care who you are, nor where, if you think you're 100% safe you're dilusional! How many times have you heard the words related to a violent crime, " I can't believe it happened here!" or " I can't believe it happened to such a nice person! " ? Crap can and does happen anywhere at any time. There are 3 kinds of people. Those that fear that knowledge and truly are paranoid to the extreme. Those that ignore it, hope nothing ever happens to them or a loved one, and who foolishly rely on others to protect them. Then there are those that recognise we live in a violent world, accept that knowledge as truth, and whom rather than live in fear or foolish ignorance take the needed measures to reduce the risk of becoming helpless victoms. Some folks pray to God nothing bad ever happens. Nothing wrong with that but ya need to remember, God helps those that help themselve's! ;)

Mike, the first step to recovery is admitting you have a problem. Congrats, you've done that. :) The second, and perhaps most important step, is to ship all your firearms and ammo to me. I'm waiting! ;) ROFL

Get the permit.  Then get one from Fla then get one from Utah.

There are two reasons for getting a permit, one is to prevent one's butt from ending up in the hoosegow, the other one is political.

The more people that have permits, the more the politicians will view gun ownership as a political reality that can influence their employment.  I understand that gun ownership is fairly well known and that gun owners are known to have big mouths but having a permit is something different.  It isn't like picking up a .22 from your local Walmat, you have to really want it.  And that level of action is something that can really translate into political action and the folks in politics understand that.  It's why my kids have carry permits whether they carry or not and why I buy hunting and fishing licenses whether or not I use them.

I have both, one under federal by being a retired law enforcement officer and the other from the state.  The one under federal law allows me to carry in all 50 states, this is an annual permit wich requires me to qualify every year with my handgun and pay $50.  The one from the state cost me $50 also but it is good for 5 years and does not require one to have to qualify.  Our state one is not hard to obtain, pass the background check of course, and be a Hunter Safety graduate, have served in the Armed Forces or take a course that is reconized by the state, oh yes be 21 years old.  Needless to say there are a number of states that do not reconize our state permit.  I've been retired for 24 years, but as long as I can qualify I'll pay my $50 on operate under federal law as it is good in all 50 states.  I do love my 1911s for CC and have them in several sizes and in  9mm, 38 Super and of course in 45 acp.

Alaska, Arizona and Wyoming allow citizens to carry open or concealed without permits. These states also provide paper permits so their gun owners can travel to other states. :)

Virginia posters please read the hunting regulations in ref to a CHP when hunting. It allows more privileges than open carry. You can not open carry without a CHP during archery season.

Evidrine, as someone said earlier, I'd double-check about being able to carry while bowhunting.  As far as I know, we can still only carry .22 ratshot while bowhunting, regardless of permit status.  I didn't see any changes about it in this year's state hunting regs book, so I'm assuming no change in the law.

On the proposed amendment on the Nov. 6 ballot, definitely vote "yes" on it, but don't count on any major changes to LA's gun laws in our favor.  It basically will just make it tougher for the antis to pass any new gun control legislation, but I don't think it will overturn anything already in place.  I hope I'm wrong about that, but it's a good amendment anyway.

And to your original question about getting a permit:  Do it.  I got mine this year (I live in Jackson Parish) and it has been worth it.  I carry about 90% of the time, and I practice more now that I'm carrying.  More practice has gotten me into reloading, which saves money and is fun to boot(got a tumbler full of brass going as I type this).  I took the wife to Tennessee this year and I carried on that trip too.  The feeling of extra security is great.  No more "I wish I had my gun with me today".  Spend the money, take the class, get the permit, stay in practice, and above all, stay safe.

So with the election results being common knowledge by now, and the question of to get the permit or not seemingly unresolved, I thought I'd dredge this up and ask.

evidrine, just to be nosey, what did you decide?  I hope you have elected to get your permit (not for political reasons)

IMO it is worth getting, and worth keeping.  Peace of mind in turbulent times.

Last summer the wife and I did a river boat cruise from budapest to Amsterdam. The night supervisor and I became friendly opponents relatively quickly due to my early rising habits (about 3/4 in the morning0 and he being the sustainer of life by having coffee made.
We argued about guns mostly. he being just plain against civilians having guns.
When he found I was from Texas he wanted to know if all people were as wild as I because I carried a weapon. I asked him what protection he expected from the police if he was robbed or attacked. he said i don't go to parts of towns where there is that possibility.
I ask him why! Isaid you are a citizen of Hungary and you should be able to go anywhere you wish--why do you let others dictate to you whereyou can go?
he said I just will not go to those parts of town. I asked him if those people could come to where he was.
I said that, without restriction, I  would go to any part of Houston that I wanted to go too and do the business that I wanted there because I was able to protect myownself.
We argued and he would not concede. I thought I was talking to a New Yorker.
Blessings
TEXAS, by GOD

Some folks foolishly think others can and will always be there to protect them or that they can reason with the unreasonable and talk their way out of anything. Others cast fantasy aside, live in the world of reality, and know the only one best suited and able to protect us is we ourselve's.
