conceal carry permits...
« on: October 01, 2012, 05:11:07 PM »
are they worth it in our current political situation? i have a class scheduled for this week and my main reason for getting the permit is because Louisiana has now made it ok for a permit holder to carry while bow hunting. how many of you guys currently have one? is it worth the investment? or will gun ownership soon be a thing of the past all together?

Had one ever since I turned 21 and that was a very very long time ago. If you are gonna carry you should do so legally in the eyes of your state.

I am set on gettting one. That really isnt the issue at the moment. I guess what I am asking is do you think it would be wise to wait until after the election???? Just to see how things go.

Yep worth it. Once I got it I always carry where legal. I just got back from a trip to Alabama a state my lic. is not legal in. Also traveled thru. Ga. again not legal there. I did not like not being able to carry in those states. Will look into an out of state lic. from a state that works in states where mine does not. Another thing to consider is if enough people get one it will have made a big political statement . It might cause a federal law to get passed to make other states reconize out of state lic. much like a marriage lic or dri. lic.
Would add in my state Va. many cities , towns and counties had/have unique gun laws and it would be hard to keep up with all. With a carry lic. your lic. supersedes all other laws and you are safe to carry anywhere in the state.
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

I don't open carry unless hunting or such . Here open carry is restricted in certian cities that have a population over 100000 . Also why draw attention or cause concern by someone who might get to vote aginst guns ?

It depends on if you want to legally carry or not.  Having a gun while bowhunting shouldn't be the driver.  If you are going to carry, you should carry at all times you legally can.

The election will have no impact on your ability to carry in LA.  And to be honest, our carry rights have improved in the last 4 years.... Obama even signed a Credit card bill that increased the places we can carry.

BTW, I hadn't heard you can carry while bowhunting.  You might want to ask on Bayoushooter.com

A guy I know recently took the class and the the instructor told him that now you can carry while bow hunting as long as you have the permit.

I am just nervous with all of the Foreign Polcy bill signing and such. These policies clearly put us in a position to lose rights to gun ownership. $200 bucks may not be much for some out there, but can be hard to come by with a family these days. Just not sure if I should spend the money now or wait it out a little longer and see how things play out.

The Foreign policy you are talking about will have no impact.  Plus, it won't happen as the Senate won't ratify it.  If we do our part, it will stay that way.

The Senate has no interest in ratifying it.  Most Send like being in office.  The only ones who could vote for are in A handful of states.

I have two; one from the state and one from the feds.
I live in VA where open carry is not illegal, but it's very inadvisable, IMO.  You WILL get stopped and questioned if you go all the places you might go undisturbed with you or weapon concealed.  It's just asking for some kind of confrontation.  The argument that "it's your right," has be talked to death.  "Use and display your right before you lose it," it an insane argument.  Carry it hidden and shut up about the fact you have it.  If you go where something ugly is going down, the bad guys there will shoot first at those they can see have weapons.  It's just silly.  In addition, it makes you look like you like your elevator doesn't go all the way to the top.  You look like a show off at best and a terrorist at worst.
Now, all that said, I open carry in hunting season in the woods and fields because the big single actions don't lend themselves to being readily accessible under a heavy coat in the middle of winter.  No one sees it 'cause ain't no one there.

In Ore I think concealed carry is allowed while hunting of fishing and while going to or coming from hunting of fishing. i do not have the permit and doubt I'll every get one. I don't go into places where i'm likely to need one and have never even seen but one pot plant in my life much less a field of it being protected by men with guns. Yes I'm sure they are there. My own thinking about concealed carry is that only the guy's with a record should be required to have one and they are the one's that don't! I really suspect that american are overly paranoid about a lot of things.

Now I did carry years ago. I drove trucks for a living and went into places to deliver no sane person should go. I have, illegally, carried in New York City, Boston, Chicago and many other city's in the US. Those tye places I avoid today. What I have never had to do in any of these places is take a gun out. Strange, I thought they were dangerous. I delivered a load of meat to the Bronks one time and didn't have a load out so spent the night to watch the side show. Most the hookers were nice people and the drug dealer's just wanted to sell some drugs. One guy came up behind the truck and opened the back door. When he got up to the passenger side, I rolled down the window and asked him to go back and close the door, he did. Nice guy just a crook to make a living!

Out here in Oregon everyone feels the need to carry everywhere or their life is at risk. I call that paranoid!

CC is like a seat belt.  Have it just in case.  If I thought I needed a gun to go somewhere, wouldn't it be smarter to just not go?

CC has little to with paranoia, but preparedness.

OP, I'd check on the bowhunting bit.  There are sometimes instructors who don't understand some details.  Louisiana has some convoluted laws.  Bayoushooter is a good place to start.

Mike in VA:
You state you live in a state where open carry is not legal.
Do you mean you live in a city in VA that doesn't allow open carry?
In Virginia open carry is legal.

I don't carry to look tough nor do I do it because the law says I can.
I do it because my preferred handgun is a Ruger Bisley Blackhawk in 45 colt.
A little hard to conceal something that large in the summer with just a T shirt.
In the winter would be a little easier but then I have to contend with a heavy coat.
I really very seldom get questioned about it to be honest.
In fact I have been through many driver license check points and drunk driver check points and have only been checked once by a younger officer.
In VA you can open carry into a bank if you want where as a CCP holder can not.
Sure you will be checked there but there is nothing they can do as long as you are legal.
About the only real looks I get are from the people who don't like guns that live in the city.
I don't go out of my way to flash it at them.
I just go about my business.
I live more in the country and guns are encountered on a regular basis so no one make a big deal about it.
As for the thugs targeting me first, that may happen, not sure because it has never happen yet.
I do know that it has stopped one possible gas station holdup because the guy got out with a gun in his hand and started towards the station but when he saw I was standing at the counter with my gun in full view he turned around, got back in the car and left.
We got the tag # and description of the guy and the police stopped him a couple of hours later and arrested him for an outstanding warrant and on drug charges.
Not trying to say this is the norm but it worked that night.

Longtom, I misprinted or you misread.  Open carry IS legal here in VA.
The fact that you carry a single action is commendable, IMO.  A 45LC with proper loads has been the premier stopper for hundreds of years.  Congrats on  your choice.  It's also my very favorite, both for carrying and for hunting.  If I had one of the nuew Colts I'm afraid I'd feel to proud to speak to anyone.
I suppose I should have said more about my decision not to carry openly.  My job before retirement makes me recognizable across the state.  I would feel oh so silly if people who know me saw me carrying a gun outside my clothes.  I'll keep mine tucked away and quickly accessible, but I can see that might be a problem with a single action.  Although Mernickle makes a super concealable holster for the single action.  Stay safe and keep yours eyes open.

Mike,

How does one get a concealed carry permit from the feds?  I did not think there was such a critter.

Mike:
I figured it was a misprint but wanted to make sure.   ;)

I thought about a CCP but with our state being open carry and the fact that I really didn't want to be fingerprinted.
Not that I am wanted or anything, just I have never been printed and don't care to do so now.
To those that want a permit or are required to have one in order to carry then by all means get one.
The main thing is to carry as much as possible because you never know!

As many meth labs as there are in the woods, I think It's a good idea to carry when you can.

That's not modern! It has a cylinder rather than a slide and doesn't carry nearly enough rounds for effective spray and pray.  ::) ;D

Besides, the frame is too large for my stubby fingers -- I'm limited to a K or L frame. :(
