Out of all of my handguns; this one doesn't get fired as much or taken out as much, has never even been placed in or carried in a holster but if I had to narrow it down to one favorite, it would be my .45ACP Colt Commander.  I have others that are much better choices for small game or large game hunting, plinking, carry, etc.  But this one is my absolute favorite.

Ok I gotta ask; How does the least used, least carried, holster virgin make the most favorite list?? ???  I mean for me to even like a handgun it needs to spend time being carried in a holster, or at least tucked into my waist band.

Good question. I tend to spend a lot of time with my favorites.

Fair question.  I have several handguns, semi-autos, revolvers, single shots.  I particularly like the 1911 platform and have four, including this Commander.  I shoot the others alot.  Wear and tear on them doesn't bother me. All of my guns are for shooting, no unfired safe queens - although this one is close. That being said, this Commander is a 1954 (same year as me) I got it, I believe to be unfired, in the box (which is where the original "Coltwood" grips are.  The fit and finish on this gun is just so much better than most other guns that I have I just hate to damage the finish by carrying it in a holster. Which is another reason that it doesn't get shot as much.
If times ever got hard enough (financially or politically) that I had to choose just one to keep, it would be this one.  And if that happens, I'll carry it and shoot it as much as the others are now.
When my son inherits it, he can do what he wants with it, shoot the heck out of it, wear the finish down to bare metal, whatever.  But as long as I have plenty to shoot, I'll shoot the heck out of them and enjoy shooting this one once in awhile.  I get a lot of pleasure out of shooting it occasionally and just admiring it for the classic pistol that I think it is; my favorite.

My son and I have both bought guns that were just too nice to shoot. They weren't kept long. We can't look at a gun and not want to shoot it. ;)  However, if ya have one yourself more power too you. :)

Oh, I shoot it.  I agree with your sentiment about not keeping guns that are too nice to shoot.  With this Commander, it's kind of like my old Jeeps; I have a 1980 CJ5 and a 1994 Cherokee that I am willing to drive anywhere.  If they break or get scratched up, I fix what needs to be fixed so that I can still drive them, anywhere.  I also have a 1958 Willys 4x4 wagon with less than 40,000 miles on it.  I drive it too, just not nearly as much and not as hard.  Same with the Commander, it's... um... special and I treat it as such.

Favorite handgun,  it would be my S&W Model 58 in 41mag with 4" barrel(ccw) in nickel finish.   For a revolver the S&W N Frames are hard to beat.   There on the larger size but not obese just a tad heavy but they feel and handle awesome.   I have a piece of american history in my hands.

Well, I have a favorite model of automobile. I neither own one nor would I drive it for every ocassion. However it is my favorite none the less. For many, practicality for all foreseeable purposes has little to do with the subject of favorite. I have a long handled 1/2" ratchet wrench it is my favorite tool I use it as often as I can, but it ain't worth a damn when it comes time to roof the house, or tighten the screws on my glasses.

Nice artwork on the case SpiritHawk!
My favorite is an SP101, 2" hammerless. A close second would be the S&W 686, 4"

I'd have to say my Ruger Super Black Hawk gets the nod.  I have had it since the 70's and somewhere along the line I had some custom work done on it to enhance it's appearance.  I guess this one is gonna stay with me till I draw my last gasp of air.

I guess my favorite is my USFA single action, it is not the revolver I shoot the most these days, but it gets fondled a lot. My Ruger new model flat top in 44 spl has been getting shot the most of all the revolvers, but the USFA old school single action .45 with it's outdated weak design is still my favorite for some reason. I have to say it's held up very well over the past several years, it still locks up tight with no movement at all after all this time, I guess if you fit things together right even the old weak designs will last for a while.

A tough question. I could go with several models however for the area I live in I will go with my 4 5/8 inch Ruger Super Blackhawk. It has a Belt Mountain locking base pin and Pachmayer grips to help with heavy loads. Loaded with a good hardcast bullet for the woods or a jacketed HP for about anything else it would cover my needs.

I mentioned all my Rugers before but this one gets the most carry time. 45 LC Vaquero.

To many favorites to just pick one, but I like my big bore revolvers, and 1911's.  For plinking, my High Standard Victor is hard to beat..

If I had to choose it would be a tie between Grandfathers Smith M46 with a seven inch barrel and my Smith M650.

Favorite is a hard one.
I understand what you are saying about a favorite that fits you hand was handed to you by someone special or was used on a hunting trip.
I may have too many to have a single favorite.  I have a few that are more favorite than others and a few that I could sell and never really miss.
All were purchased with a purpose,  some over lap, from sitting in the nightstand for things that go bump in the night, to hunting big and small game, to target shooting.
My first pistol I was given by Dad when I made the pistol team is special and the first gun I bought with my own hard earned money are two I will never let go.

So I was just logging in my new S&W earlier and the collection sounds like a rendition of the 12 days of christmas.
12 Double action revolvers
11 Semi Autos
10 Rimfires
9 target punchers
8 Smith and wessons
7 Sig Sauers
6 38 specials
5 Stainless steel
4 pocket pistols
