lemmeseehere...  :-\   I think I first saw what I guess was the first Zombie move "Night of the Living Dead" During my first year in the now defunct RVN.  Scared the living dickins outa me!  To this day I don't like "horror movies."
I am  a few years younger than  you but I feel the same way about that movie. There is just something creepy about it. Today's horror movies are all about racking up the body count and showing as much gore as possible. The horror movies of yesterday always left most of it to your own imagination and that is more frightening than any amount of gore they can throw up on the screen.
Hi NSA! Can you see how many fingers I am holding up?

Vampires, werewolves, alien monsters, and zombies are essentially shift workers. They go in and out of popularity episodically, and it's now the zombie's turn. Last shift was during the late 70s or early 80s, when they were affiliated with voodoo as black magic. Before that was early 60s, where they worked with both voodoo and night of the living dead type stories.

As a kid it was the Mummy, Frankenstein, Dracula, the Werewolf, the Blob, Creature From The Black Lagoon. Those were plenty enough to keep me awake nights! Gee whiz, who needed Zombies?

Heard on the radio today at lunch that there was a box set of those coming out soon. Total of ten scary movies but I think most of those were included.

I saw a movie with Boris Karloff called Black Sabbath, where there were three or four stories produced into one movie. I was about ten at the time and it scared the heck out of me.

Creepiest movie I've seen was Robocop. Not so much because of the movie, which was filled with extreme violence, but because of the audience, several of whom laughed at really inappropriate times.
