TAUNTON, Mass. — Animal officials are trying to reunite a dog and its owner after the pooch survived an 11-mile ride from Taunton to Providence wedged in the grill of a car.
William Muggle, the animal control supervisor in East Providence, said the driver of a Toyota Camry was traveling about 50 mph on Route 44 near Segregansett Country Club on Sept. 20 when the dog -- a white female believed to be a poodle-bichon frise mix -- ran into the roadway.
Muggle said the driver stopped, but when he didn't see the dog anywhere in the road, he assumed it was a near-miss for the pooch and continued on Route 44 into Rhode Island.
"Then he got into East Providence, 11 miles later, someone flagged him down and told him the dog was still stuck in the grill of his car," Muggle said.
Muggle said the driver immediately drove to the East Providence Police Department, where officers and animal control personnel removed the dog from a vent area just below the car's front license plate. The dog was taken to East Bay Animal Hospital for treatment.
"(We) looked at her, X-rayed her, and that's when we found no broken bones, aside from the concussion, and a possible ruptured bladder, which turned out to be something minor," Muggle said.
The dog was taken to Bay State Emergency Clinic, where she was held overnight.
Muggle said his department has contacted Taunton police in an attempt to locate the dog's owner, but to date, there have not been any dogs matching the description reported missing.
"For her to hold on for 11 miles and survive that journey is nothing short of a miracle," Muggle said.
