My 10-year-old nephew, Juan Pablo Osorio from Bogota, Colombia, got a fallow buck that scored high Silver in Records of Exotics. He was using a Handi Rifle in .308. Shot was about 40 yards. We found blood and lung tissue at point of impact. Deer went about 80 yards and folded. JP tracked, helped drag out, helped load on truck, caped, and gutted his first buck. Was his third deer, having gotten a fallow doe at 8 years old. Also got a WT doe and a 300 pound sow at 9.
I have four H&R frames with 5 barrels. Have a 204 Ruger for the originally .308 frame. Both shoot well. Also have a 12 ga. Slug Master that shoots 1 1/2 inch groups at 100 yards. Have taken deer with it out to 120 yards. The other two are a 17 Mach II and 17HMR. The 17's work great for youngsters/first time shooters. The lack of recoil and low noise help. I have the same scope on the 17s as on the 308. I teach shooting with the 17's and then we hunt with the 308. Works great.
I like my H&Rs. They won't outshoot my bolt guns, but that's not the point. The do fine at 50 to 100 yards, which is what my kids shoot deer at.
