Fall 2012 - Feb 2013 H&R Success posts
« on: October 04, 2012, 04:48:00 AM »
Please post your hunting success here if you used a single shot H&R or NEF to take your game.
We need some info, Petemi had a very easy to follow template:
Game:_______________________________

Rifle/Shotgun_________________________

Cal./Ga.______________________________
( I would like to add state/prov hunted in)
Or tell the whole story and post pics too if you want. This is our thread to show what we did after tinkering and tricking out our favorite guns. ( single shot, H&R and NEF only)... Shotgun, rimfire, muzzle loader centerfire, All are welcome to post it and watch the tally. Last year we kind of had some competition between calibers and it was quite fun.
So lets start out our fall with some GBO hunters posting and lets see who is putting more meat in the freezer.
I very much enjoyed seeing family and friend pics last year and seeing the country you hunted in the background on the pics is fun too.
Now last year we had some hunters post from game farms or ranches. And we had some negative comments.... kids..... play nice. If you own an H&R/NEF And this is what you use it for, please do post it here, your numbers count just fine. We all do our own thing and can share it here and if someone does not agree with it, this is where we need to respect the others choice of how they choose to hunt.
Any success that happened before today but was a fall of 2012 season can be posted. Anything from last years seasons should not be posted.
If there are number issues and I messed something up PLEASE pm me and I will correct it with a disclaimer as to why the numbers changed, but it can get a little confusing, so please bear with me and it will be fun to see which gun you carry which day to either help the underdog caliber or if you will stick with your favorite just because you want it to win.  Alright... here we go.
Thanks and please be safe and have a fun season. thejanitor
Here is a link to last years in case you are wondering how it turned out:

My granddaughter took her first ever game. A nice little 7 pt whitetail, in Michigan's recent youth hunt. She used a NEF .243 with 100gr. Rem. core-locks. Took both lungs at about 85 yd., deer staggered another 10 and went down to stay. I'll try to post a picture later. woodsrunner

Shot an antelope in my home state of Wyoming in September with my 35 Remington Handi (rechambered from a 357 mag) with 200 grain hardcast from Beartooth Bullets.

For some reason, I cannot access GBO from my home computer to post a pic.  >:(  I can access GBO from my work computer, but photoshop is restricted so I cannot post a pic. :(

Wild Turkey - 11 lb. Hen

H&R Topper 88 shotgun

16 Gauge Modified choke

I took this hen this morning, the last day of our fall shotgun season. She was the only one in the flock that I had a decent shot on so I took it at 25 yards with a 1 oz. load of Federal #6 game loads (purple hull). It's great to be out in the woods.

Thanks guys, we can only only shoot hens in our fall season so I took advantage of it. This is actually the 1st hen I've ever shot. I couldn't wait 'til Thanksgiving, she's in the crock pot now and almost done. My kids and I can't wait! :)

The turkey was excellent last night! You could split the meat with a fork after letting it cook for 8 hours in the crock pot.

My son and I went out today, I had the 16 gauge again and he had his Versa Pack with the .410 barrel on it. We hunted all afternoon for squirrels, couldn't find any so we decided to head over to our favorite pond and try to jump shoot some ducks. We saw some ducks but a beaver scared them all away before we could get to them.

By this time it was sunset and we were getting ready to leave when the woods around the pond came alive with grey and red squirrels. My son missed a grey with his .410, after that we sat still near the base of a big white pine and waited. I saw a grey jump out onto a limb, my son didn't have a shot so I unloaded the #4 Hevi-Shot duck load that I had with me on him. A couple seconds went by and he fell from the tree with a thud. By this time it was dark out and time to quit but we found a great squirrel honey hole.

Friday morning i shot a spike with my 45cal. huntsman and my son made a great shot with the 50 cal huntsman on another big spike 8 minutes before dark last night. We had been hunting for the last three days on a draw hunt on the peedee wildlife refuge in ansonville, nc. He made an amazing shot at 70yrds while sitting on his butt, legs asleep and deer taking his time. shot was offhand. Hes 16 and this was his first buck and his 3rd deer. The season has officially begun ;D These were some special loads and barrels that i had acquired on this site. I love this place :)

I'm one of those lost souls who reached their technological plateau at a DVD player. I sent the gun down to Dick William's gun shop downstate and had them install the Poly-Choke and a Pachmyre recoil pad. You could send it straight to the Poly-Choke company, too. I love the gun because it handles so fast here in the swamps and tangles in the eastern U.P. ;)

Doublebass73, while we don't exactly have the same gauge we seem to have the same preference in stocks, chokes and barrels lengths.  Below is my 12 gauge "Pawn Shop" wonder I've been using for years.

Choke is modified and the stock is standard issue plus a saw and 3 x 9" power sander, walnut stain and coupla coats of Linseed oil.  Stock and forearm are thinned down too.

jpshaw,

I agree, you have nice taste  ;) These guns carry so easy all day long plus they come up nice and fast with the straight grip. I've tried a bunch of other guns but this is easily my favorite all around hunting gun.

Doublebass, while you're shooting a 16 and I'm using a 12 we both seem to have the same favorite load.  One oz of 6's plain and simple.
