We had our Youth hunt at Mingo NWR this past weekend and I posted it in a separate post after day one.  The janitor asked me to post the final handi count on this thread and I thought it was the perfect spot.  I checked in 27 of our successful hunters.  I asked them caliber and type of rifle.  The other staff only asked caliber so I can't include all of them.  Out of 27, 11 used handis.  7 in 243, 2 in .270, 1 in 25-06 and 1 in .308.  Thought you guys would want to know that the handis are going strong with the youth.  I bet they will get a handi for their kids to use in 10 or 12 years!  Here is a link to the kids and their pic on our facebook page:

Handis: .17 mach2 (x2), .22 lr, 22 hornet, .22 jet, .223, .243, .270, .280, .357 max (x2), 35 remington, 35 whelen, 45-70, 445sm, 30-30, 410, 500 S&W, 50 AK

Doublebass, while you're shooting a 16 and I'm using a 12 we both seem to have the same favorite load.  One oz of 6's plain and simple.

Yep, I use an oz. of 6's for just about everything. Does the job well and is easy on the shoulder. I've even tried some 1 1/8 and 1 /4 oz loads but they don't pattern as well as the plain old 1 oz loads in my gun.

Black Bear
H&R Handi converted to 45 caliber muzzleloader

Went deer hunting this afternoon with my H&R Handi Rifle conversion. Today was the first day of ML bear season, I've been seeing sign but never really thought I'd get an opportunity to actually get one.
I put a new stand up last week in a spot I've been wanting to hunt. I've got an apple tree 100 yards to my right and on old grown up field to my left. When I got the stand up I took my range finder and ranged straight down to the ground, 13 yards, that's 39 feet. So the first thing I did when I got in the stand today was to get secured in with my safety harness.
I hadn't been in my stand 10 minutes when I spotted the bear. He was headed straight toward me and when he got about 15 yards from the tree I was in, I dropped the hammer. The 200 grain SST hit him in the top of the head and exited the bottom of his neck. He dropped like a ton of brick!

This isn't a big bear but it's my first ever and I'm tickled with him! :)
GOOD SHOOTING!

Whitetail Doe

H&R Handi Rifle converted to 45 caliber muzzleloader

Hunted the edge of a big laurel thicket this morning. Got in my stand well before daylight and just as it was getting light enough to see about 30 yards I spotted movement behind me. It was a deer and it went in the thicket, I was hoping there would be one following but it just didn't happen. At 9:00 AM I heard footsteps in the laurels in front of me, I was standing up in my stand, stretching my legs from sitting all morning. I turned to get in position incase a shot presented itself. A couple minutes latter a big doe stepped out and turned down the hill headed right to me. She stopped at 25 yards and looked to her left, the 200 grain Hornady SST went in her right ear and the game was over.
I've got the backstaps wrapped and in the freezer and the quarters are hanging in the meat locker, an old refrigerator I gave $50 for just to have a place to hang meat when the weather's too warm.

GOOD SHOOTING!

Chalk one up for the venerable 30-30.
Replenishing my venison supply on opening day here in Connecticut.
(We can use rifle on private land >10ac.).
My first deer with my new Handi.  Took from May on to get the barrels, trigger and pet loads sorted out.
Actually, its my first deer with a Handi - period.
She was running thick with other does and yearlings.
Connecticut is very liberal w/doe tags.  We get two tags for gun season, both can be does. (we need to thin our herd).
As Foxworthy says, she'll be 'gooood eatin'.

CONGRATS Raz!!

OK, WHAT A Connecticut OPENING DAY!!!!!!! (Apologies, I copied this from my thread on the 32/20 ::) )

Started out 5am to my favorite flat... 7:45 a good young shooter buck. (Scrub buck is what we call them. Spikes, three point odd # of points, or one side screwed up...ETC.) He walked up to about 30 yards and turned his head to face me.

I put the 2x Leupold on his nose and squeezed the trigger.... Bang and he was flopping on the ground. Load, 17g AA1680 and a 123g Hornady bullet. The bullet exited the center of his neck with a dime sized hole. I dont do this very often, not sure why I did this time, but I knew exactly where the gun shot and was confident as all get out as the gun (As you all see) LOVES this loading!! ZERO meat loss on this one!!

So Its opening day... Its 8AM and I am done!  Well, done for the morning...  ::)

I get him hung and clean myself up, put the 32/20 away and bring out the 25/35... I walk down the other side of the property, down into a swampy area and sit down. I did not have to wait long  ;) A chunky spike was working his way down to a opening about 130 yards in front of me. He turned and offered me a quartering away shot. I set the X hairs on his heart and sent a 117 RN bullet his way. The deer mule kicks and heads back up the hill. I have a god blood trail..

I let him sit for about 20 minutes before following.

I called a friend to help get him in the back of the truck. He isnt a hunter. but likes the venison. ;)

After a solid 30 minutes, he was still alive when I got to him! When I gutted him, his on side shoulder was broken, and the bullet turned and exited the ''point'' of the brisket and his heart was GONE!! How was he still living???

In one day I broke in BOTH my Trotter specails, it was a very GOOD DAY!!

I am starting dinner... anyone wanna guess what we are having?  ::) ;)

Chalk another one up for my for my 45 caliber muzzleloader conversion.
This morning I went back to the stand I killed the bear from. About 8 o'clock I spotted this buck working his scrape line. He had a fresh scrape about 20 yards from my tree. I waited until he made it to check this scrape and then put a 200 grain SST through the heart. He gave the old mule kick and ran maybe 30 yards before piling up.

GOOD SHOOTING!

I bloodied my .44mag handi last Saturday morning with a 148yd "Texas heart shot" on a 32lb. coyote.  Handload consisting of 240gr jsp BDX bullet, Starlin nickle plated brass and 24gr Lilgun.  Made quite the mess :D Guts out the mouth!  Can't wait to try the .44mag on a whit tail (with better shot placement!)  I have a pic on my phone I can post later.
