I bagged a doe this evening with my 35 Whelen shooting Fed 225gr TBBC. I'm still at the camp, will post pics Friday or Saturday.

One of my hunting buddies used my 17HMR to dust two crows off a gut pile Saturday!! Oh the red mist was in the air!  ;)

Now I am doubting him returning the rifle...  ::) :o

I have to add one for the 7mm08 I bought cheap and repaired earlier this year. Shot a big doe at 75 yds 140 gr. bt handload. No tracking on this one. This is one sweet little rifle. The best one is my 9yr old grandaughter got her first deer last week with her 243 superlight, 95 gr nos partition. I'll attempt to attach a pic of hers. Now if we can get some cooler weather here in ms  maybe the wife can get one with her 44 or the 7mm08 depending on the season at the time.

Glad I found this site again.
Nice 3.5 yr old buck w/ some broken tines this year w/ my 30/30.

I've also taken both my spring gobblers w/ my 12 ga and at least one limit (6) of squirrels with it this year as well.

T-storm;
I have .223(24"HB), 30-30 and 30-06 (Std contour).  Got both 30cals because I already had dies for them.  I prefer the 30-30, but the '06 is plenty accurate.  Shots on game around here are rarely more than 100yds.  I down-load my '06 loads to 30-40 levels. There are actually a couple more 30-30 successes than represented on the board if you read thru the posts.  30-30 barrels appear to have Marlin-style "micro" groove rifling and have a reputation for very good accuracy.  '06 barrel has traditional rifling.  Both are 10" twist.  Have Brian fit you one and have at it!

Thanks for the info.   I actually used a bolt action Winchester 30/06 for deer hunting in 2011 mainly because I thought I would bear hunt.    I got that gun out again this year, shot it 1/2 dozen or so times and was not happy.

I then went and put my 30/30 back on the Handi and one shot, bingo...dead center.    Same thing on the buck pictured above.    I'm thinking if I ever get drawn to elk hunt in KY I would like to be ready w/ the Handi so I  have some interest in the 30/06.

Early this AM as the fog banks drifted thru.. a very mangy coyote tried to slip by my buddies youngest boy... he did not make it. ;)  ::)

Sorry no pics it was rainy and foggy, I left the phone home, but I wasn't touching this one anyhow!!! It  had hair just at the tip of the tail! Looks like a rat tail with a tuft at the end!

One 20g Hornady to the lungs at about 90 yards. Jumped at the shot and ran about 30-40 yards and piled up. This is my "old" HMR I traded off to him last week.

The rut this year in south Texas has been a little bit off from previous years at the ranch, and I had been blaming it on the weather since it's been unseasonably hot of late, figuring that most of the rut activity was happening at night.
Last Friday morning was anything but ideal weatherwise, and hunting in short sleeves especially after Thanksgiving in south Texas isn't much like your typical deer hunting weather.
I settled in my stand overlooking a cleared petroleum pipeline, and as the sky began to lighten from the east, I noticed several dark objects about 75 yards out in the dim light.   I finally was able to distinguish the shapes as deer and later those four deer were joined by a sounder of hogs as they crossed several yards further out than the deer.
By the time it was light enough to see pretty well, the deer had wandered off the clearing.  Fifteen minutes went by and nothing was around until I noticed a deer step out further down about 100 yards toward a creek bottom that crossed the pipeline, when I then noticed that it was a buck, and a pretty decent mature one to boot.  I had rattled up a couple of small bucks about a week before, and brought them in to within 30 yards of me, but neither one of them were shooters.   This buck was a shooter, so after watching him work his way closer and then begin to cross the opening, I leveled my 45-70 and put the crosshairs on his shoulder as he turned broadside.   After squeezing the trigger the buck just disappeared in the tall grass.
I got out of the stand and paced off 50 steps to the buck that was stone dead.   The 400 grain Speer jacketed soft point had again done it's job.  The buck had eight points 17 1/2" spread with 10" G2's.   I had already taken two archery does, so I now have a nice mature buck to top off my season with my Handi Rifle.
My culled down Handi's are the 45-70, and then I have a few others to keep it company...357 Mag/Max. .45 LC/.454 Casull Carbine, .243 Ultra, and 20 gauge Tracker II.

Thanksgiving morning I finally got my deer.  My first 200 yd shot with my .30-30.  Very small 1/2 of an 8 point.  Had the full 4 point curl on the left and it was broken off on the right.  Fiqured he got whupped.  He went about 50 yards down a creek bed.  Longest shot previously with the .30-30 had been about 60 yards.

So far I've taken 1 doe @ 120 yds, 1 coyote @ 60 yd, and 1 wild hog @ 30 yd. My nephew borrowed MY gun, MY ammo, MY stand, and MY gloves, :o and has taken 2 doe @ 45 yd! All these kills were taken with the lil handi-dandy H&R in 45-70 shooting the Hornady Leverolutions complete with the handi-grip stock and a trigger job (thx so much gbo for the trigger job guide-the best upgrade on this rifle of all) ;)

Hey guys, chalk one up for the 444. Walking out to the truck this morning after seeing one buck but couldn't get a shot, three does jump up and ran but on stopped at about 50 yds. One shot one deer. Shot her in the neck and that was it. I'm shooting 240 gr. speer sp over 4198. Tommorow starts gun season again. Next up the 308 bull barrel. My wife will be shooting the 7-08. She hasn't had an opportunity yet with her 44mag. Sorry no camera available this morning.  Clayton

Hogs - two
H&R Handygun 2
30-30 Winchester
150 Grain Barnes TSX FN
Slow rolling through bottom thicket just after major rain storm.
Who says a single shot is too slow to double up?
Once again the Barnes TSX pummels em. Wish I could recover one to keep as a memento.

A good year for me 2 of the Grand Kids  dropped their deer with 1 shot each. This year they used the same rifle a sorta tuned up 223 Superlite with a 1.5 X 4.5 scope. Ammo was 45 grain Remington UMC $14.00 per box Walmart Ammo.
Pictures are posted at:

I was truly amazed at the performance of the ammo to say the least.
Rooster at 10 years old is getting a little "Cocky" he thinks deer hunting is easy (4 deer 4 shots in 2 years). He may be in for a surprise next year. His Dad is putting him in for an elk hunt on Ft Sill.
This was the first time Sassy had been hunting so it was a real treat for Grandpa . She very calmly aimed and shot . In a very calm voice she said "It is down, I watched it fall in the scope" I barely heard her because I was hollering so loud "You got it"You can tell by the picture how happy she is though!
