Armed business owner thwarts attempted robbery

By Stan Finger
The Wichita Eagle

Steve Yager saw him approaching from two blocks away.

Even though it was awfully warm for the first morning of October, the pedestrian had his sweatshirt drawn up tight against him and the hood up over his head.

“Well, here comes trouble,” Yager thought.

Sure enough, the man came up to him and asked him for the time.

“There was a clock right there in the antique (store) window” right next to where he was parked in the 900 block of West Douglas on Monday morning, Yager said. “It was just a ploy.”

The man turned and walked to the front of the antique store, then returned to where Yager was waiting in his truck for an employee to arrive at about 10 a.m. so he could open the Club Billiards that he owns next door.

“Well, why don’t you just go ahead and give me your billfold and I won’t have to pull my gun?” Yager said the man told him.

“I said, ‘Really?’ ” Yager said. “I reached over like I was going to get my billfold and grabbed my gun and stuck it in his face and said, ‘You mean like this?’ ”

I am glad it worked out for him. They had an interview of him with him showing his weapon on one of the local TV stations. Terrible gun handling! He had it pointed at himself several times during what was about a 30 second segment. If I had been the cameraman or reporter I would have been running for cover! Powderman, are you not surprised that the terribly liberal rag called the Wichita Eagle, at least according to you in another post, even ran the article?

PM,
We are both suffering from poor memory. Sometime back I posted an editorial from the Eagle and I cannot remember the subject matter but you bashed the editorial along with a link to some conservative site that bashed the Eagle for being a liberal paper. Sooner or later I will find that thread and repost it for you.

Aside the bickering, I liked the idea of the businessman pulling his own gun on the would be robber.

It's been three or four years ago, I was visiting my friend Larry in Ft Lauderdale, Florida.  The shop was closed, and everyone had gone home a couple of hours earlier.  Larry was doing his daily end of business closeouts, and counting the days reciepts.  I was across the room surfing the net.  Larry's brother Marshell who lives on the street, came in for his weekly allowance.  When Larry let him in Larry relocked the door.  Larry paid Marshell from the cash drawer, then decided to allow Marshell to let himself out.  All this was visable from the windows.  Two men were waiting and when Marshell opened the door they rushed in.  One had a big knife, the kind Mic Dundee carried.  He pointed it at Larry and told him to give him all the money or he was going to cut him open.  I heard something that got my attention and I looked over the computer and saw what was going on.  I stood up and stepped around the desk.  The second man grabbed a knife from his belt and opened it saying what he was going to do to my anatomy.  I pulled my windbreaker back, and put my hand on my Ruger P-85 in the shoulder holster.  That guy turned pail, he screamed, This XXXXXXX guy has a gun".  He turned and was trying to run without taking his eyes off me.  He ran over his partner knocking him down.  Both lost their knives, and got up running for the door.  I walked over and relocked the door.

My friend Larry was shaken up.  He was shaking and pail.  He took the keys from his desk and walked into the back of the shop.  He came back with a gun case for a pistol.  Larry opened the case and set it on the desk.  There was a Colt revolver in .38 Spl.  Larry said "Rog I don't know anything about that, but I want you to teach me how to use it".  "Dad said I would need it some day, and I laughed".  "The old man knew what he was talking about, glad you were here".  Larry and I spent the next day at the range.  We go to the range now and shoot every winter when I am visiting.  Larry's wife makes him take her once a month to the range so she can shoot her Beretta.
Where is old Joe when we really need him?  Alaska Independence    Calling Illegal Immigrants "Undocumented Aliens" is like calling Drug Dealers "Unlicensed Pharmacists"
What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.
