.280 rem / Barnes TSX / Velocity?
« on: October 04, 2012, 08:59:59 AM »
Hey Guys,

My father and I are going after Cow Elk in a few weeks and I have a velocity issue to sort out. I've been loading some Barnes 160gr TSX for my .280 rem and have been getting sub -moa groups with it. Problem is that after checking the chrony today, I saw that I was averaging 2180 fps (no wonder the recoil seemed so light). Seems too slow. My load has been 47 gr of H4831sc. How fast should I try to push those bullets for Cow Elk inside of 200 yds?

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

Ive had my share of problems with barnes bullets not opening up well. If i couldnt get them to at least 2600 i wouldnt consider them. Any cup and core 150-160 grain bullet will take care of ANY ELK at 200 yards. They may have there uses. Maybe if you were going after elk with a 243 or 2506 or like in my case. the only barnes bullets i use anymore are the 180tsx in my 300wby. Its got the umpth to make them work and to be totaly honest the only reason i use them in it is its the only bullet ive got to shoot under moa in that gun.

Looking through my reloading bullets yesterday and found a partial box of 7mm Barnes copper bullets, the original ones.  Looks like they should group well but I never could get them to group worth a darn in my 280, my 280AI, or 7mag.  Never loaded any in the 7-08 because the Barnes bullets are 160 grain in weight and I bought them for an elk hunt.
