Well hello people !
« on: October 05, 2012, 04:42:09 AM »
I'm one of the new kids here now , my brother always comes here as a guest and I double dogged dared him to join .  So he says to me " Why don't you " ?  So I did !
Ta Da ! Hello from the great town of Roswell NM .
My name really is Anna Rice, no relation to the author by the way .  I'm sort of a grown up tomboy who loves to hunt and fish so I hope I can fit in around here .
It's my pleasure to be here and perhaps make a few new friends with the things we may have in common on this site . Thank you for allowing me to come here and to be a part of your company .

Thank you , and yes I have some hipwaders but I seldom ever use then .  As far as needing them for the site.  I prefer to grow wings and stay far above things like that .

Thank you guys , it's nice to see the senior members here welcoming a new comer onto the site like this .  As for my hunting , I've scaled that back to bird season and antelope if I draw out for a license.
The mule deer around here were just getting to much for me to handle anymore .
Even after field dressing one of them ,it was getting to hard for me to drag an animal out of the brush that nearly weighed as much as I do !  And those were the little four points !

Just one of my brothers , if they feel like it .  But the little sister thing comes into play and I usually bag out where they don't  8)  . It also depends on which hunt my schedule allows me ,or them to go on. BBF , it's ok to ask , most people do . It was my father who got me into hunting and fishing , daddy's little girl , so you know how that can be .
But growing up with three big brothers was a story all it's own , especially when my Barbie dolls would beat the snot out of their GI Joes !  Oh well , I would tell them don't come into the kitchen if you can't stand the heat . Dads to old now and his arthritis keeps him down most of the time these days .

Mom passed away  four years ago and he still hasn't gotten over that.  It's hard on people that age to deal with that , he still talks to her like she is there in the room with him .
And he asked me if that makes him crazy , i told him no and to do whatever makes him feel better .
My brothers are all married and raising kids so its hard for them to get away a lot of the times .
Or it's a big family thing to them and aunt Anna feels like a 5th wheel just hanging around being a
pest . Sibling rivalries there are still alive and well even today .

Welcome Anna;
Pleased to see some of the fairer half chipping in.  As far as the waders..these a agreat bunch of folks..sure we sometimes join in raucous debates, but I think if we all were to get together at a big squirrel hunt..we would like each other quite a bit.
Matt & GB keep a decent, family oriented site, so I hope you will stay & join in the discussions..frequently..

Thank you Iornglow , i gracefully accept your invitation .  But it's sorta like my friends say about me , if Anna's mouth is moving that means she is awake !  Hey about the squirrel hunt , last year I learned about " barking a squirrel ".  Have any of you guys ever heard about that ?
An old hillbilly from the back woods of NC taught me how to do that , it is a blast to do if you have never done it before . Lets see how many of you guys know what that means . lol
It takes a lot of skill and patience to do and not splatter the squirrel . I know you guys from the Carolina's know what it is , and maybe a few of you ridge runners from W Virginia !

I helped a guy load a cow Elk into his rented P/U a few years back.  He was from back East, and he thought he could load one by himself ( He did not realize how big they can get.)

This nim rod had not even field dressed the Elk. Fortunately, he had shot it right by a road and we could drive up to it.

I can just imagine FPH !  I've ran across hunters like that before , where if they even did field dress the animal it looked like they used a chain saw to do it with .
Or like you said , they didn't have a clue about dressing out the animal and the meat became rancid .
Some people's kids ???

Don't feel bad Ben , I had to have a scope on my rifle in order to do what this guy did with open
sights . And I still splattered the squirrel with a 22/250 .
He told me he could do it with a muzzle loader in 50 cal . Didn't Jed Clampett originate from Tennessee in the tv series the Beverly Hillbillys ? I can't remember .
But I do remember first hearing about this on that show on tv land re-runs years ago .

I'm game for learning new things.  What is and how do you "bark" a squirrel?

Lol , you want me to answer that Ben or do you want to ! But I will give it a try .
Back in the days when a family may have had only one gun, it was usually a rifle. To provide food for that family, as with this it being a squirrel. The hunter would see a squirrel sitting on the limb of a tree.
Knowing that a direct hit from the rifle would render that squirrel into nothing but a grease spot.
He or she would aim the rifle at the tree limb just below the squirrel and fire at the limb and not the
squirrel. The bullet would then rip up the bark on the limb, sending it into the squirrel either killing it or rendering it unconscious. Hay , it really works !
