While I sympathize with one's grief..I am at a loss to understand the roadside markers.  Since it is Christian doctrine that ..' to be absent from the body, is to be present with Jesus                                                                       at home with Christ.... I am surprised to see rather prominent Christian families  erecting these memorials..
  I guess it is their business, so long as the memorial is not constructed of substantial material which may prove hazardous to others....the wide shoulders of the highway are there for a reason.
  Understanding people's grief, perhaps highway departments are reticent to do away with these displays.  I guess if I had some on a highway I was responsible for, if it fell into disrepair and wasn't being maintained well..then I would remove it.
   If this practice is to continue unabated, in 20-30 years some of our highways would have little clear shoulders left!

Thanks for the kind words all! I'm not advocating shrines on our roadways. I know it can get out of hand. I think small temporary markers at bad, dangerous places may cause some to think about the consequences. My Grandson just keeps a small cross, and flowers once a year, and it is a personal thing with him.The man who owns the property where the accident occurred gave him permission to place it actually on his property. What a nice and caring couple they are! We offered to pay to replace the wooden fence destroyed in his front yard during the accident, and he wouldn't accept a dime.Said he was going to replace it anyway.

NW;
   I do sympathize with your pain...and a small, neatly kept, "reminder" memorial..especially on private property immediately adjacent to the tragic scene, can be a good thing...

the only ones near me are kids that were killed.  I don't know what I would do if it were my child.
but as of now I don't mind them.  most are out of the way of the mowers, but if they interfere with the DOT then they should be removed.  it's a tough subject for me.

HUNTER. I too am sorry for your loss. We tried for years to get a traffic light at a busy crossroads, I even talked personally to the head of the dept of trans, and hwys in Frankfort. There were many wrecks there. It took the CO sheriffs brothers death there to finally get lights. 2 girls were killed there just before that. POWDERMAN.  :( :(

I don't mind memorials, unobtrusive & modest.
Jesus said we should treat other as we'd want to be treated... and he didn't qualify that by their party affiliation, race, or even if they're of diff religion.
