Thinking of re-stocking a fox-river fifty
« on: October 07, 2012, 04:48:23 AM »
I have a cheap muzzle loader.  It is the ugliest thing ever made.  It is nickel plated with a cheap black wood stock.  I'm thinking about making a new walnut stock for it using traditional hardware.  I will probably leave the nickel finish and use silver color butt plate and trigger guard.  I know this is basically like building a new gun do to the design of muzzle loaders.

Have at it! Sounds like fun. If you don't know about them check out Track 'o' the wolf for stock blanks, either pre-carved or bandsawed rough blanks.

i have a youth model fox river 50 was going to put a full size stock on it, the problem i ran into was having a stock inletted, because mine has a screw up through the bottom like a regular rifle and a ramrod hole through the stock, one of the stock makes said he could copy it if i sent the stock in but they do not stock that design

I checked out Track of the Wolf.  I plan on order my stock blank, trigger guard, butt plate, and other items from there.  I don't plan on copying the stock exactly.  I plan on making it look more like a traditional rifle.

how are you going to put a tenon on it that was the other problem i ran into

I plan on using the tenons that you drill a small hole into the barrel and peen in place.  However, I'll probably solder it.  I was also thinking about turning the factory under lug into a tenon and pinning the barrel to the stock.

I'm looking for parts right now and was planning to use all silver hardware.  However,  the nose cap I want to use is made for a 15/16 barrel and my barrel is 7/8.
