Associated Press    MOBILE, Ala. –  A police officer at the University of South Alabama has fatally shot a naked student whom authorities said repeatedly charged the officer.
University officials said the confrontation happened early Saturday morning when the officer went outside a police station to investigate a banging noise at a window.
Once outside, the officer was confronted by a naked man acting erratically.
 
Authorities said the man repeatedly charged the officer, who pulled his gun and retreated several times in an attempt to defuse the situation. When the man made a final charge, the officer shot him once in the chest.
The student has been identified as 18-year-old Gilbert Thomas Collar of Wetumpka.
Local prosecutors are investigating the shooting. The officer who fired the shot has been placed on paid administrative leave.

I would like to know more details.Did he have a weapon? Couldnt they have tazed him? If I shot and killed a naked kid just because he charged at me I am sure I would be sitting in a jail cell.

Well, that's different - you're not a cop, you don't have the judgement to know when you're in danger, and you don't have automatic benefit of doubt when you say 'I was in fear for my life from the nekkid guy'
Yeah, you'd get locked up, not paid vacation.

About all that was on the B'ham news last night was what Charlie posted. I did NOT gather tho that the student was armed in any way. Just naked and likely high on drugs of some sort.

Whatever happened to less than lethal defense against unarmed folks? The officer should have had a night stick, mace or pepper spray and perhaps even a taser to defuse it without loss of life. If not surely he had a radio to call for backup and they would have had access to such.

I'm not gonna rush to judgement on this but to me it stinks badly. I already know what the outcome will be even if it goes to trial. Here in Bama and especially in the Bham area police do no wrong regardless of what they do. At trial they turned loose the half dozen or more cops who beat and kicked a totally unconscious man who was of no danger to them. This crap has gotten out of hand and needs to be reined back in soon.

You know darn well if any of us had shot an unarmed man, naked or not, we would be screwed.

Was less lethal devices like pepper spray, taser gun, etc. available to the officer?
 
Was the officer in a position to call for back up, and was it near by?
 
Anyone here ever wrestle a guy high of certain mind altering drugs?  Not easy, as many folks under the influence display strength and resistance to pain compliance way above and beyond that of a normal person.  How about naked?  Believe it or not, all else being equal, a naked person is a lot harder to physically control then one who is clothed.  Training helps, but when all is said and done, an average cop is the same as any average man on the street - no super human strength I'm afraid, and no guarantee of success, one on one...which brings up another point..
 
If you are that officer, do you want to risk going one on one, hand to hand with a guy who is obliviously high, or out of his head, and threatening you,  knowing that if you fail, and he gets your 17 shot Glock away from you, your life, and the lives of a lot of the students you are sworn to protect is now in serious danger?
 
So there are no real easy answers here....Never as cut and dried as some people like to think.  Hopefully, there will be a competent investigation into the FACTS, and the chips will fall where they may.  The only things for certain are an 18 year old kid who made some bad decisions (drugs) is dead, a family is in mourning, and a cop will have to live with his decision to use deadly force for the rest of his life, whether it was his only option or not..

There very well might have been more to the strory than meets the eye, but I have to instinctively give the cop the benefit of a doubt.  When he was confronted with a naked guy charging at him, who could blame him (the cop) for thinking that he was about to be screwed if he didn't protect himself?

It says it happened at a police station.  He might not have had all his equipment on like a night stick or other stuff.  He might just have been a dispatcher armed only with a gun.  However, seeing that the guy was naked, he should have taken a tazer.  My cousin was a police officer and he said if someone is high on drugs a tazer can kill them due to their increased heart rate.  However a tazer would look better if the student did die than from a gunshot.

Several different sources say that the whole incident is on tape, so hopefully that will help to sort this out.

Was the guy hurting other people ? was the guy bigger than the cop ? Could the cop gone back inside ? Was the guy hurting himself ? if so should you kill him to keep him from hurting his self ?
I tend to side with police in most matters until they prove the cop bad . It seems in this case the cop might have a lot of proving to do.
Facts ? one dead guy and one cop , were there other witnesses ? I hope the truth does come out .

The most effective tool in the devil's arsenal....drugs.....what a waste.  Far too many drug related incidents now.  It would appear the cop used excessive force, but it wouldn't have happened at all if the young guy was sober....

several years ago I was involved in an incident with a guy that was high on meth and it took four men to hold him down till a cop got there and cuffed him.
he was a small man and never stopped fighting until he was face down with his hands cuffed behind him.
cops should not be expected to handle those types with "kid gloves".  they can kill you.

I one self defense class I took we saw a film from the dash cam of a Ga. state trooper. Long story short he pulled a guy and the guy was high on meth. The guy was small and the trooper was big. A fight started , trooper shot the guy in the chest . Trooper was getting gun taken away so he tossed it ( he had to ) he also hit his emg button. The guy was beating the trooper to death when other troopers got there. Three troopers got him cuffed . He had been shot center of the chest point blank with a fed 230 gr hydroshok 45 acp. He died a couple hrs later so yea police can't always handle these guys with the same "tenderness" they can sober folks . But police need to back off sometimes and wait for help if the see what is going on up front. To be honest If I were a cop I would want other cops around if a naked person was involved .
One must always remember the difference between nude and naked is what is on your mind !

MOBILE, Ala. –  A University of South Alabama freshman wasn't armed when he was fatally shot by a campus police officer, authorities said Tuesday, and he had taken LSD, assaulted others and chased the officer before being killed.
Mobile County Sheriff Sam Cochran held a news conference to release details about the death of Gil Collar, 18, of Wetumpka. The nude student was fatally wounded early Saturday after confronting the officer on campus.
 
Collar went to a music festival and took the drug before assaulting two people in vehicles and attempting to bite a woman's arm, Cochran said.
Authorities said Collar then went to the campus police headquarters, where he was shot by university police officer Trevis Austin. Austin is on leave while investigators review the shooting.
 
Video taken by a surveillance camera showed Collar nude and covered in sweat as he pursued the retreating officer more than 50 feet outside the building, Cochran said. Collar got within 5 feet of Austin and the officer fired once, striking the student in the chest, Cochran said.
 
Investigators are trying to determine who provided Collar with LSD and could charge that person with murder, Cochran said.
While campus police typically carry pepper spray and a baton, Cochran said Austin was armed only with a gun during the confrontation.
Cochran said he had "serious concerns" about the killing of an unarmed student when he first heard what had happened, but he better understood the officer's decision to open fire after watching the videotape of the shooting.
 
"It's very powerful," said Cochran.
Cochran said authorities will allow Collar's family and media representatives to view the recording later, but it will not be released publicly.
Collar graduated earlier this year from Wetumpka High School, where a vigil planned in remembrance of the longtime prep wrestler will be held Tuesday night.

I agree.  a cop should not be forced to retreat.

The cop probably did what he was trained to do. Crazy acting people can be very dangerous, and this is probably a case where the kid got too threatening.
