357 max recoil in ft. lb.

Anyone got a calculator for the 357 max, 158gr. at 2000fps.?
 
Trying to figure recoil, and the on line formulas all give different answers, some very different.

Wganz's is correct, would to know weight of firearm.

But I'll guess under 8ft pounds of recoil

My loads from my rifle are closer to 15# but Thats a 180 @2200, from a 6.5# LWT shorty. Same load from my 8# full size with lam wood is just over 12. ;)

This is in my 22" Handi, and I'm trying to figure what they want to know the powder charge for, when they don't ask what kind of powder?....

Weight of the powder charge is relevent because it's part of the ejecta just as the bullet is, the type of powder is irrelevent, you already know the velocity which along with firearm weight and bullet weight gives you the recoil, the formula is shown on this calculator site.  ;)

This being the case, the max. is well below the 30-30 in recoil at the loading I use....that's a good thing.  I've never been that cognizant of recoil, and unless it was a very hot 45-70 or a heavy 12 ga., I haven't paid it much attention.

i was just guessing roughly 15.0 gr charge
and 7 lb. gun - it shows 6.4 shove on Lee

Yep Spanky, I've shot everything over the years up to and including a 50 BMG.  I have some serious spine trouble now though, and if I'm not careful I will be an invalid.  It's not the discs they have repaired that will give me trouble, it's the three others that are already protruding.  If they all were immobilized, I would have no flex or turn of the neck at all.  So this time when the Dr. told me extremely light recoil, I'm believing him.
 
My deer guns will for now be my 223 and my 357....

mechanic,

As a fellow recoil wimp with a bad shoulder I think the 357 Max is about as good as it gets for deer rifles although I've never shot a .223 Handi for comparison. I have an older Max with the slim contour barrel and it weighs in at 6 lbs. even. It's a joy to shoot even with full house loads. I'll be using 158 grain XTP/FP's this season over IMR-4227.

My favorite rifle is my 280 Handi, and I'm hanging onto it for a while.  With light bullets it's and easy kicker too...maybe not too much later.  For now the 223 is a tack driver, and the max. should cover up close and personal.
 
Can't shoot anything or even drive for 5 more weeks.  Counting the days!  Going insane!  Not used to nothingness...

Truth be known I prefer the light kickers myself. I've shot quite a few deer with 22 caliber centerfires and my Max. The old saying is true... it ain't the size it's how you use it. ;D
 
Like Doublebass said I also like the 158gr. XTP's in my Maxi. I've worked up some very accurate loads with H110 and that bullet. In the 223 I like a 60gr. Nosler Partition for deer.
 
My Dad has a bad back also so I hear what you're saying about the recoil. It isn't worth hurting yourself by shooting a heavy kicker. The 223 and 357 will knock them down just as quick as a 30-06. ;)

When I had my shoulder surgery The Dr ( Tequila drinking,Shooting & Jeeping friend) Told me to give up hard recoiling rifles and Porn. (I sold my 338 Win) ;D
The 357 max is a mild one. My Grandkids use them.

 I thibk like most of the guys that most any maxi load is gonna be fine and your first posting of vel and bullet weight will make for a very pleasant shooter. (Rem a 30-30 with a 150 is only doing a little better in vel and lacks the bullet diameter..

Ive long suffered from a whiplash injury (20yrs. on) and for a good long time turning my head/neck for a rifle was, well, a pain and set up stresses and tensions. I went to handgun so my arms could soak up more recoil and I could get behind the sights. It still kept me shooting and Ive since shot rifle even in some competition to good effect. Do as the doc says and give yourself a real chance to heal, you will be glad you did (I just know youve lived long enough to be a smart man  ;D ).
