445 wildcats
« on: October 08, 2012, 09:39:16 AM »
Since i already have two wild cat handi's based on 445 sm brass, thanks to jedman and BB the 358 cheeze whiz and the 308 chipshot i was seeing how far i could neck it down. On the right is a 445 necked down to 25 caliber with no annealing or fireforming. Next one i am gonna try is going to 22 cal.
445 brass is 47.6 gr water volume
cheeze whiz is 44.7
Chip shot is 41.9
Haven't checked the 25 yet

Jason,
To my eye these casings look to have quite a bit of neck. This was the "thing"at the turn of the 19th century with the 22Hornet and 30-06 calibers... Today we know .250 is all thats required for good neck retension. To get my drift look at the 284 Winchester neck length.
Also shoulder angle, you can get more cap with a steeper shoulder, also lower pressures with min body taper, but its probably pretty good is still the base 445 dimentions..

Also, a nosy question. How are you dealing with custom die costs? They can get mighty costy... ::)

I am not sure.  I don't have a chronograph. Case capacity is 6 grains of water less than a 35 Remington.  I am loading 26 grains of i4198 with a hornady 200 rn. I have been giving my wife hints about a chronograph for Christmas so I will have to wait and see if I get one.
