.22wmr bolt or semi auto?
« on: October 08, 2012, 04:24:42 PM »
Hello. I'm looking at buying a new rim fire rifle. I already have two tube feed .22lr and a .22lr pistol. I have decided on the new rifle I was a .22wmr. .17 suck for this area just because it is way to windy for that light of a round all the time.

I have narrowed it down between the Remington 597 magnum and a savage 93gl. I'm a lefty so the savage has stuck out to me so far as well as the 597.

I have decided with it being a bolt or semi auto I want either to be magazine fed. Also I am not willing to spend over $300.00 on the firearm alone. I still want to put some descent glass on it

So whats the pros and cons of the two when it come to reliability and accuracy?

I am assuming the bolt will be more accurate and I have heard bad reviews about the 597 in the past mainly concerning that they have junkie mags. I like the idea of having a auto loader for a follow up shot but IF its going to be huge difference in accuracy between the two I want the one that is going to be the most accurate. I also plan on shooting 2200fps CCI bullets if that makes a difference.

The 597 magnum was discontinued because it was dangerous.  Google for its recall.

Got a 93gl this summer.

I'll bet its magazine would give the 597 a run for its money.
You've got to tweak it so it doesn't throw the unfired rounds out the top.

But mine shoots pretty good. 5 shots into an inch at 100, if you keep it dirty.
22 Mag is a hunting round so an inch is good enough for what I want to do.
Light weight and light on the wallet also.
Put a Leu 4x28 rimfire on it.
Just need some rabbits, coyotes and bobcats to walk in front of it.
Mine likes CCI 40 gr JSPs.

The difference between people who do stuff and people who don't do stuff is that the people who do stuff do stuff.

597m recall was for 17hmr only. 22 mag in 597 is still listed on web page. i have both that you mentioned in 22 mag. the 597 i have started as a 17 hmr. i rebarreled with a jarvis. it is now a tack driver.i could have gotten a remington barrel on thier exchange but had heard good things on the jarvis. the original 17 hmr barrel shot very well and i had already installed the jarvis hammer for a much nicer trigger. the savage with the accu-trigger is also very smooth. the savage is cheaper and seldom do i need a followup quicker than the bolt action. go to rimfire central for more on either gun.
