.500 scope problems.

I think I finally got a scope strong enough to not get beat up. A simmons slug hunting scope. Works well. I bought the expensive steel rings. Well... now the aluminum H&R base is getting chewed up. I could see marks on it behind the rings where it was sliding and gouging the aluminum. What would be the best scope base to get? I'm really tired of rezeroing this thing over and over as it eats up scopes and mounting components. I want something that I will never have to mess with again!. Also being a lil farther forward would be a blessing as with the H&R one, the hammer nearly touches the scope. So close I can't get the lense cover on.
Are there any integral steel mounts? or should I just get a steel weaver mount? If I do get a steel weaver mount would it be a horrible idea to tack weld them together?

Either a steel base or one of the aluminum bases that have fully supported slots like the IronSighter, most  H&R scope bases are shown in the FAQs.

 I agree with Tim, Iron sighter makes a good one! I had problems with the factory base on mine bacause the slots where not cut to offer full support across there width. Its in the FAQ's. ;)
This is NOT desireable in a heavy recoiler like the 500/45-70 (hand loaded)

Craaaaappp. I haven't pulled the rings off yet. I sure hope my $30 rings don't look like that!


*Edit* I ordered the Warne ones listed in the FAQ.

I use the Deadnutz mounts on all my Handis.  No problem on .500 or 45-70

I recommend having a gunsmith modify whichever base you choose and your receiver to 8-40 screws. They are larger and will tolerate the recoil much better than the small factory screws.

While 8-40 screws certainly won't hurt, they aren't really necessary IMO when a reasonably light weight scope is mounted, <12oz.  I've never had a problem with screws being sheared on any of my heavy kickers, 500S&W(700gr @ 1400fps, 350gr & 385gr @ 2100fps), 50kpsi 45-70 loads(300gr @2400fps), 499 Hubel Express and 50-140(570gr @2200fps), 460S&W (200gr @2900fps). All my scopes are mounted in low or medium rings, the higher the mounts used the more leverage the scope's weight has on the base at recoil. I also bed the scope rail in Loctite(FAQs) which really makes for a solid mounting.  ;)
