Saw one at a gun show minus stock. I have the pistol versions (model 35) but the Pocket Rifle has a lot going for it, if it is indeed legal without short barrel rifle paperwork. I heard years back ATF declared the broom handled Mausers with stocks ok, even though they had a less than 16" barrel. The pistol (rifle) I saw had a 10" barrel, sadly no stock, though at $600 I would have had to pass anyway...So what does everyone know about this one if I ever do indeed see one? Would be neat for small game. Thanks!  8)

A guess, and only a guess is they might be a "grandfathered" firearm.   Whether they do or do not still need extra paperwork to have legally I'd still question though.   No BATF regulations expert by any means, its been near 40 years since I had an FFL.

When exact BATF regualtions are needed, they are your best source for the IMO.  Or you could weed through the endless mumbo jumbo of them on line to see if you felt "good enough" with answers found there.   You would be the one answering to them... if it were me I'd want the answer from the south end of the north facing horse itself.   ;)

Found one for sale...this one is a 32 rimfire, but can't find anything in the regulations.

According to the web site add posted by Mechanic the original barrel length is 18-24 inches, well within the current regulations.  If that is the case some one shortened the one you were looking at.  As Ladobe mentioned depending on when the gun was made it may be old enough to be a relic/curio and subject to those rules.

At any rate you need to find out what you are getting into if you buy a short barreled rifle, or a pistol made from a rifle.

In the 70's when I partnered in gun shop in CA the Stevens pocket/bicycle or whatever you chose to call them pistols and rifles were pretty popular.   We had quite a few of them come to us to make new parts for them, for complete restoration back to safe shooting condition, or to at least restore the factory finish and function for a wall hanger.  They came in many different barrel lengths from the factory, including as short as something like 6"-8" or there abouts that I remember.   They were first made from about in the 1870's, long before the regs on short rifles, so making them grandfathered.   Back then anyway, even in CA they were all assumed by even law enforcement to be legal to own, even those with the short barrels.   In those days they could be bought for quite low prices, probably adding to their popularity.  Many we restored were exceptionally accurate shooters.   So much so that my partner even mounted a vintage scope on one he bought to use for tree squirrels that probably had a 10"-12" barrel. It was an easy carry for him to just jump on his dirt bike with to get into the back coutry of the coastal ranges.

Thanks for the help! If I ever see one in .22LR, might jump on it after a call to BATF

I had to register both of mine as AOW with the $5 stamp.
