Graphic Middle School Sex Class Outrages Parents  Posted in Top Stories | 360 comments Graphic Middle School Sex Class Outrages Parents Oct 9, 2012
  By Todd Starnes
Hundreds of Houston-area parents are outraged over a new sex education program that teaches 12-year-old children about oral, anal and vaginal sex – and uses graphic curriculum to instruct students on how to use condoms.

“We don’t need the school district showing the kids how to put on condoms,” said parent Christine Kalmbach. “This is very alarming.”

Kalmbach’s son is a seventh grader in the Cy-Fair Independent School District, a suburb of Houston. She was one of many parents who attended a school board meeting this week to voice her concerns about the graphic sex classes.
The new curriculum is called, “It’s Your Game, Keep It Real,” – a program that includes real-life scenarios about condoms. School officials did not return calls for comment – but they told parents that the program was selected because it has a proven record.

District officails told television station KTRK that the curriculum was approved by a subcommittee made up of a group of parents — and the school board unanimously approved it during summer break — when many parents and students were on vacation.
School officials told local reporters that parents were given the choice of opting their children out of the sex education class. However, a copy of the permission slip sent to parents does not give them that choice.

Middle-schoolers will begin taking the class in two weeks –but parents have launched a Facebook page that they hopes will persuade the district to delay the class.
Several parents told Fox News that the information booklets provided by the school district did not indicate the graphic nature of the classroom instruction nor did it mention the level of detail.

“I started looking at the curriculum and I got this sense of dread,” she said. “I thought, ‘oh my gosh, what is it that they are putting in front of our kids?’”
Kalmbach said the videos include cursing and slang. The actors are dressed provocatively.
“It has heavy petting and making out – and this is the seventh grade curriculum,” she said.
Kevin Brewer has three children in middle school. He told Fox News that the material is simply not age appropriate.

“It’s just not appropriate for this level of children,” he said. “All the real world examples show teens driving to their friend’s house, hanging out at homes where there are no parents present — and that’s not the reality for the vast, vast majority of kids in this age group.”
He said one two of the school board members had actually watched the videos.
“This has not been vetted,” he told Fox News. “Now that parents are taking a truly active role, you have hundreds of parents expressing outrage over it.”
Some of the video was so graphic that a Houston television station was unable to air footage from the curriculum, Kalmbach said.

“I think it’s soft porn when they have a girl on the couch and she says, ‘Let me help you put the condom on,’” parent Mayte Weitzman told television station KTRK. “They’re teaching them oral, anal and vaginal sex,” she said. “They’re teaching them all kinds of sex. They’re not focusing on abstinence.”

But some parents defended the new program.
“We have to give them that info,” one parent told the television station. “They need to be aware as much as it may hurt us, but they need to be aware.”
But Kalmbach disagrees.
“Our kids see enough trash on tv,” she said. “We don’t need our school district showing this type of inappropriate behavior in a school district setting.”

When I was an 8th grader in 1968 one of my female classmates who was the daughter of a Mennonite doctor became pregnant. To bad a condom was not used or maybe not used correctly. Abstinence training by itself is not effective.

We should maintain  a reasonable level of decorum in any school classroom.  Some of the parents suggested it was necessary to enter into a pornographic demonstration to teach their children.  For these folks, they can easily do the extra instruction at home, without getting other parents outraged.
Then too, we hear of the twisted, power hungry few who strive to become policemen so they can exercise power over others. Is it possible that we have in the curriculum producers, a few closet perverts who want to do their dirty work among middle school children?

Of all the things that schools need to be teaching kids--even high school kids--let alone middle school kids, it is not how to use condoms, or all the variations of sexual behavior.  The fact is that most the kids could probably teach the parents a thing, or two, but that is beside the point.  Some things just don't need to be any part of school curriculum.

Seems they can teach youngsters all about the mechanics of sex... but they cannot teach  the age-old wisdom of voluntarily restraining oneself from doing stupid things and indulging in risky behaviors outside of marriage.

Schools should not be teaching anything that the average person would not be allowed to teach to other people's children.

Think about it, if J.S. T. Ragman started teaching your 12 year old daughter about oral, anal, and vaginal sex at the local playground, how would you feel about that?

This is nothing different than a kid looking up porn on the internet.  Teen age pregnancies are at an alarming high.  When I was a kid in 6th grade we were taught about sex education.  The movies referenced pig anatomy.  How ignorant is that?

Sex is a part of life.  I dont know anyone that waited until they got married to have sex.  Those that do- kudos to them. Why not teach a kid how not to mess up your life by having a child at 14?  I say teach them about sex AND birth control.  They are going to do it.  This isnt the 1930s.  we are a very connected world with the internet and kids are going to find out about these things.  You can put up all the blocks, filters and restrictions you want on a computer.  They will find a way to get te intell they need.  May as well teach them some good birth control measures.
It's all a hot mess...........

Well, I haven't seen the curriculum so I won't pass judgment...

I will say that I'm married to a RN that has been head nurse in our school district for 12 years...I've also raised 3 daughters, the oldest is 30 they youngest is 20...

AT WHAT AGE DO YOU TEACH YOUR CHILDREN ABOUT SEX???

Want to wait until 14??? 15??? 16???

How many of you waited until you were 16???

Those with children...When did you discuss sex with your children or did you ever discuss this with your children???

I can tell you right now, if you expect the parents to do this, it will not happen...With the divorce rate at 50% or so, most parents are working their tails off trying to pay the rent and keep food on the table...Parents simply do not communicate with their children as much as they should...

Our high school has 20-30 young ladies pregnant during any given year...

Too bad they weren't taught how to properly install a condom....

It's reality folks, just like gun safety, sex education should be taught early...

The problems with out of wedlock pregnancies is not a matter of not knowing what causes pregnancy.  How many here thinks most t16 year old girls or boys..who have no idea what causes pregnancies?
So, it is not a matter of knowing the mechanics....it is more a matter of providing a moral framework.  Many of these teenagers are like their parents,.. who certainly know the technical issues, but are living in a moral wasteland.  As flintlock said, many of the parents have moral/relationship issues of their own; and the old "do as I say, not as I do"..just doesn't get it.  Youngsters don't have to be very bright to see through that charade!
When I went to high school, "sex education" was v ery minimal..still we knew how babies were produced.. ;) ;D   Let's not be silly!  there may have been pregnancies in my class  (96 students), but none that were visible before graduation... One reason this did not happen very often, was because there was a  "stigma" attached to unwed motherhood & fatherhood.  Nowdays they don't even scold those who mess up....on the contrary, they often reward them with all kinds of government goodies.  They force brawlers to go to "anger management" classes, but they don't send these screwups to "genital management" classes....I wonder why?
Then too, back then, guys didn't have that "breed them and leave them" attitude..because it wasn't that simple!  If you got a girl pregnant, you did the right thing to try to square the situation..marry her & support the child..
That way at least it was rare for a guy to bed a woman he can't stand..or vise-versa for that matter.

So, the problem as I see it is, people have lost their moral compass and government has inserted itself into private lives...way too much.

Irrespective, It's not the job of the schools to decide about teaching morals/sexual conduct to our children. It's OUR responsibility.

Those who shirk their responsibility will get what they deserve.

Letting "the government" decide moral issues like "sex training" is not the way to be a parent and has the potential to enslave us all. 50 years ago this sort of thing would have lead to public uproar and even outright rebellion. Parents would have given the public schools  some "sex training' , telling them to shove their class up the their ....... :-X

My concern is the appearance of School endorsement of teenage sex. Casual sex by teens (and adults) can be very harmful to psychological development even if they don't get pregnant.

Unfortunately this is why we're having this discussion. Way to many people "not" raising thier kids these days.

When I was a yute, we were taught sex education in the 7th grade--of course it had nothing to do with how to install a rubber, or buggery, blow jobs etc. and it sure as heck didn't make one bit of difference.  There wasn't a kid in the class who didn't already know more than enough about the subject.  It didn't stop any of the guys from doing what comes natural.  It didn't seem to make the girls more cautious.  I had a blind home room teacher in the 8th grade and you just wouldn't believe what went on in that class.

Anyway, the point was made that kids have so many more sources of information now days and I'm pretty sure they all take advantage of it.  The schools indeed are to prepare kids for life, but there are lots of things about life that are not appropriate to be taught in schools.  The older kids were always willing to fill us in on what we didn't know.  I remember very well when I was about 10 years old, the older girl who taught me how babies were made.

the problem with sex is it is a not talked about by many parents. Its all hush hush. And for many it is either not mentioned or in terms the kids laugh at. Parents compete with TV shows , other kids , school , church and any other thing their kid sees when it comes to teaching right from wrong or sex . If your kid watches sex on TV and most do and the parent shys away from teaching it or talking about it the education comes from what ever program they watch ( wonder how mant single girls decided to have a child after years of watching Murphy Brown ? ) or the locker room etc. Sex is the most basic part of life it should not be treated as taboo . Kids grow up have feelings with no instruction and some get in trouble. School teaches the mechanics but nither school or parents teach the emoitional side in many if not most cases . When working to finish a school once over 20 years ago two 5th graders were caught engaging in intercorse . Said they had seen it on TV . They had no idea really what they were doing.
So would it not be better to take away the mistique and talk with kids ? Be honest with ansewers and realize if they ask the questions they really are old enough for the ansewers .
And yes we had some very open discussions around the dinner table at our house always tempered with a dose of what the Bible taught us . It seemed to work. I was not afraid of what they may hear as they could come home and we would seperate fact from fiction and there is a lot of fiction !
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

When it came to sex we raised our kids honestly and openly. We also had some excellent conversations at the dinner table. My all time favorite was when my daughter brought up "oriential sex".  I wasn't quite sure where this was headed until we figured out she meant "oral sex"!

The problems with out of wedlock pregnancies is not a matter of not knowing what causes pregnancy.  How many here thinks most t16 year old girls or boys..who have no idea what causes pregnancies?

Then too, back then, guys didn't have that "breed them and leave them" attitude..because it wasn't that simple!  If you got a girl pregnant, you did the right thing to try to square the situation..marry her & support the child..
 .

So, the problem as I see it is, people have lost their moral compass and government has inserted itself into private lives...way too much.

EXACTLY!!
Kids know what causes pregnancy.
They don't need the schools teaching them the Karma Sutra,( I think that is the spelling ??? )
The teen pregnancy problem is the fact that most of these pregnant teens don't have to worry about who is going to feed them or where they will live.
If the girl's mommy and daddy don't foot the bill, Uncle Sam will.
And the father of the baby can go brag to his buddies that he has "another " baby mommy on his score sheet.
And when it comes to morals,,
Look at teen girls today.
How many would be considered tramps back anytime before the 1970's, if they acted like they do now?
Who do teens look up to today?
Sport stars that we see busted for drugs and accused of rapes.
Pop stars who are even worse than the athletes!
I think  most of the blame falls on liberal socitity and the parents.

What did you call the girls in the 1950s when the pregnancy rate was higher than it is now?
