I use only open sights on mine, but have heard nothing but good concerning the Weaver 301.  Lots of good reviews at the Ruger boards too.

I understand, but I am getting on in years and eyesight not what it used to be.Now, if a deer would present himself at 25 yds, broadside, for 10 seconds, I would have no problem. But I am 74 and that hasn't happened yet. so, need help from a scope.  tks for comments.

Sorry, wasn't trying to sound down on your needs.  Just wanted you to know I didn't use the mount myself.  Over at the Ruger Forum, it gets asked at least a couple times a month it seems if it is a good mount.  Pretty much everyone says yes, so I think you'd be pretty safe.  ;)  You do what you have to, if you want to keep on shooting.  8)

I have two scoped Rugers, a .30 Carbine Blackhawk with the clamp on Weaver mount and a .44 Mag Super Blackhawk with a TSOB mount drilled and tapped to the frame and barrel.  At 58, I understand your wanting to use a scope on a hunting pistol.
Blackhawk w/ Weaver

Super w/ TSOB

I also have a .30 Herrett Condender with a scope.  Really helps for longer shots.

I am curious about how the front clamp on Weaver clmp on is secured/tightened? One picture I saw looked like an allen set screw type. does it act as a set screw on the barrel itself? wonder if they damage or scratch the blued finish? tks.

On the Weaver, it is a two piece base, the front "clamp-on" barrel ring is placed on the barrel near the muzzle end, where the tapered barrel is narrower, then slid toward the frame. The rear sight must be removed so that the base can be attched to top of frame using rear sight screw hole.  The front of the base is then attached to the barrel ring using an allen head bolt/screw.  I have not ever removed mine to see if it has damaged the finish.  The .30 Carbine has a mild recoil so I don't think that the barrel ring will cause any damage.
However, the first scope mount that I used on my Super Blackhawk was a similarly designed B-Square mount that used the rear sight cut (with sight removed) and had a clamp on the barrel like the Weaver.  It would loosen up after firing 50 rounds or so and I would have to remove the scope to tighten it up and then had to sight the scope in again.  I got tired of that pretty quick.  In the bottom picture there is a shiny spot on the barrel in front of the frame above the ejector rod housing. That was made by the B-Square barrel ring; it would rub on the barrel when the screw attching the base to it would loosen.
The scope that I was using with the B-Square mount was a variable Bushnell Trophy; one of the older glossy ones.  Nice scope but kind of heavy.  I am using a 2x M8 Leupold with the TSOB.  I've fired hundreds of rounds through it with out any problems.

I suspect that the problem with the original B-Square no-tap mount compared to the Weaver (similar design) is the difference in recoil.  It could be that the combination of the 44 mag 300gr XTPs and the heavy variable Bushnell was just too much for the mount

To further answer your question; the front Allen screw attaches the base to the barrel ring. It does not go through the base and contact the top of the barrel. If there would be any marring of the finish it would be caused by the  barrel ring as it tightens against the barrel when it is pulled up against the bottom of the base by the Allen screw that attaches the base to the ring (or clamp).

thanks so very much for the explanation. I am sure the cost of the TSOB mount, installed, is out of my league. I cann purchase and install Weaver clamp on for 42.00 or leupold for 45.00, getting a machinist friend to tap and drill. Although I have a 44 mag, I will probably never use it to its full potential. Light loads are more to my liking. I am using some Magnatech Sport loads, whatever they are. I assume they are 'reduced recoil loads' . I can handle it fine with them. So, don't really feel recoil is an issue with my using Weaver 301 type.  You ever used any Magnatech ammo?

When I bought my Blackhawk it had a B-Square scope mount on it. What a piece that was.
Replaced it with the Weaver, much lighter and better setup.
Probably should have added that I was not shooting max loads in 357 with the B=Square mount. I think the problem with that mount is the length and the way it clamps to the barrel. It just would not stay zeroed no matter what I did to keep it tight.
Have been shooting some stout reloads in the 357 with the weaver mount with no problems.

tmar04, the TSOB is more expensive but I thought that the problems that I had with the B-Square we're caused by the rather stiff recoil of the loads that I was (am still) using and I wanted a mount that would stay tight and keep my scope zeroed. After reading tc scout's post, it may have just been the B-Square mount. I have been very happy with the Weaver on my Blackhawk and suspect that you will be happy with one on your Super.
As for using Magnatech ammunition, could it be Magtech that you are asking about? I am familiar with their ammunition - good stuff, I think. I have used Magtech reloading components; bullets and brass and have had good luck with both. I have been handloading for years so I don't buy much factory loaded ammo and am not familiar with all of the brands out there, and there are a bunch.

you are correct, it is Magtech. I just wonder if their 'sport ammun ition', is a reduced load, as compared to winchester, federal, etc factory loads. recoil seems moderate in my gun and accuracy good. 240 gr SJSP 1178 MV 739 FP energy. tks again for your expertise.     I have ordered some dies and plan to reload.

The Weaver mount left two small marks parallell with the bore on my Super Blackhawk when I used that set up years ago.  I also had to mill a tiny bit off of the recoil lug to make the mount line up with the rear sight holes.  This may have been either a Ruger or Weaver problem but it was the only way to line things up.  It doesn't matter to me much nowadays since I only have scopes on my TC Contender barrels and use all the others with open sights.

What length is your barrel?  I found out the hard way that the Weaver 301 will not fit the 10.5 inch barrel of my SBH 44 mag, which is larger in diameter near the action than the shorter barrels, including the 7.5.
