Actually I inherited this house from a relative that was the black sheep of the family.  She didn't have a will and I was one of 3 next of kin and the only one that didn't already own a house.  The place was trashed but it's fixable.

I seriously doubt meth was ever made here but all kinds of other debauchery was.  The local cops were happy to see a new owner move it that is completely unlike the old occupants.  Before I got moved in there was a rash of break ins and one attempt afterward.  I have warning signs in all the back windows that there's nothing in here worth dying for and I wouldn't have any problem shooting an intruder.

My house has a long disused well in the backyard.  I plan to pop the cap and see of there's water in there one of these days.  The neighbor told me that it was used by previous owners to water the lawn about 25 years ago.

I suppose that it's probably contaminated and that's why it's no longer used but if filtered and boiled, it would be good in a pinch.

Add 1 cup of bleach then have checked , maybe by a lab not in your area so as not to draw attention  ;)
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

In a lot of cases when city water came through years ago people were opposed as well water was "free" and they had to pay for city water. Most municipalities forced  the homeowners to hook up to city water when it was plumbed in. Most folks used their well for chores until something went out on it. The previously mentioned test is a good idea. Most wells were just shut down because the owner got tired of maintaining it. Or got tired of lugging all the extra hoses around to use it. Back then most of them had steel tanks as well and if it weren't cycled through as a normal household would use it, often the pipes would clog with rust and or the tank would rust out and spring a leak. Or the points would go out. So on and so forth. So I in general I guess you could say that city water shut down most wells as it was no longer economically feasible to buy parts for it just to wash the car and so on.
Good luck to you.

Amazing to me too how much water we use (lose/waste).  We take a lot of things for granted.

Living on a boat for several years will also teach you to look at potable water as a commodity ;)
