Carbon buildup in 454 casull/45LC
« on: October 13, 2012, 12:31:22 PM »
It seems I have ran across an accuracy issue with the casull.  I know we like a dirty barrel and this is not about the rifling.  It seems because of the slightly oversized chamber in many of the rifles (some worse than others) they are getting some soot blowback onto the latch shelf.  After many rounds this build up is acting like a lubricant, causing pop opens and inconsistent POI.

I have found even shooting hot loads of 296 (36.5 grs under 240 xtpmag) I still get some sooting.  (may need to get real hot to seal the chamber)  Went to range yesterday, previously proven loads shot all over the place.  Cleaned her up good today, latch shelf and lock, she settled right down.

Have any of you ran across this issue?

Thanks,
Bobby

I had sooting with moderate loads.  When they got hot the problem went away as I recall.  Thanks for the reminder.
