LOCOMOTIVE STOPPER
« on: October 14, 2012, 03:25:59 AM »
Well a Handi in 500S&W Mag jumped into my arms and made me take it home yesterday. She came with some weird looking weaver rings ans a 4x32 cheapo scope & 8 rounds of ammo. The base rings and scope will be removed . A H&R 1 piece mount installed . But I am at a loss for what scope to pt on it as it is reported to be very hard on them. What say my friends on this issue?

Williams Peep Sight and a front fire sight.  Tough to break these and less likely to put a dent in your forehead. ;)

I would go with a Simmons 4x prodiamond shotgun scope if this is a plinker gun as they are fairly well built and not out a bunch of money if you do trash it.  FWIW I am doing a test on one of these scope mounted to a 10ga slug gun, still in one piece after about 50 rounds.  If you plan to hunt with  your 500 it is hard to go wrong with a Leupold.

My two cents on this gun, I have one, it will kill anything you need it to kill without loading it to maximum levels.  A 340 grain LFNBB over 15 grains of unique will punch a hole through any deer or pig and not beat you or your scope to death.

Most any shotgun scope should work, I've had a Nikon Prostaff 2-7x32 on my 500S&W for about 200 rounds and still working fine on it as a 499HE.  ;)

Also , if your wanting a bit more power in a scope look at some of the older Bushnell Banners in a 3x9 , they take a real beating and also have a longer eye releaf ( around 4" ) keeps that nasty cut from above the eye !  ;D :o :-[

Richard,

Bad news, I am still here! :o   No problem with recoil on my end just don't see no reason to hot rod a little cartridge like the 500 S&W Mag. ::)   I have been getting my kicks launching 2 oz 10ga slugs @ > 1,400 fps, so no need to play with one them little rounds. ;) ;D

A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

I know it's not a .500 S&W but my CZ .22 Mag wears a 1-4X20 Leupold shotgun scope. It has a nice wide duplex that is easy to see in low light. If you check Redfield's website they have a rebate program going right now. If you could find that same scope in a Redfield you'd save even more money.

+1 on the Simmons Pro Diamond 4X, VERY hard to beat for the money. Also +1 on the no need to to beat yourself up. I use 20 gr of blue dot and a Lee 440 for mine. It clocks @ 1320 fps, better than original 50/70 loads that took down buffalo with no problem ;) They zip through a 10" old electric pole like nothing. If you just want to get beat up  have someone slap your shoulder with a 2x4 and save money  and range time :o

Well I removed the scope ,ring ,base Looked them over put base and rings back on and a new Bushnell 2 1/2 x32 pro circle scope and to the range I went  12 shots later it is 1 1/2 inch 50 yard group 2 inchs high . Now as to the recoil my teeth hurt from cheek weld and my shoulder too. Not a plinker.

Get the stuff and handload to 50-70 ballistics and it will be one of your favorite plinkers with more capability if/when needed.
Dont get much better 'en that.
