Gun Show in Fairbanks
« on: October 14, 2012, 09:45:08 AM »
Went to the gun show yesterday in Fairbanks.  No empty tables this year, and guns going out the door real fast.  Some of the guys that came up from Anchorage were fussing they had not brought enough stock.  Was surprised did not see a single Handi, usually see a bunch.  Only three H&R shotguns two 410s and one twenty gauge.  Did see several Rossi combination .22/410, but mostly bolt and lever guns.  Pistols on every table of every kind.  Pistols were selling fast.  I was looking at a Walther P-38.  Could not decide if I wanted it or another one on the next table.  Went to lay it down so I could move over and look at the other one.  A woman came up and took it from my hand.  She pulled the slide back, locking it to the rear.  Then she released the lever and let it go forward.  That got the attention of the seller.  When he came over she said I'll take it.  She handed him cash and headed for the door.  The one on the next table had the original German Holster, and the guy wanted too much for it. Both were WWII models.

The guy that sells cast bullets was doing a booming business.  Buy the middle of the afternoon he was taking orders since his stock on hand was getting low.  He said he had more at home but not enough to last a second day.  So he was going to be doing a lot of casting last night.  He had called his wife and told her to go by his supplier and get more lead, and to load and turn on the lead pot before he left the show.  He was totally out of big (500gr) 45s, and 50 cal.  Getting low on 357/358s when I left.

I bought two boxes of factory 454 ammo.  And another Savage 24, .22mag/20ga.  Don't know why I bought that one, since I like my .223/20.  What am I going to shoot with a .22mag?

The wife is going today, she is looking at the fur some guys selling, and jewelry.  The neighbor's wife is going to show her how to make hats and mittens out of Beaver and Fox.  Was looking for a tee shirt I've seen around town, but apparently the guy that sells them did not make the show.  It shows a Wolf Snare with the price of $1.35, then a Wolf Trap with the price of $125.00,  Then a Wolf Pelt with the price of $400.00.  The environmentalist hate it.  I'll probably go back today to see what the wife does.  Who knows I might find something I just can't live without myself.  There was a few real nice M1 Garands.  I need an AR that shoots something bigger than .223 accurately.  Something with some range and still have energy.  Or maybe a BAR or Remington auto in 257 Roberts, 25-06, or 270.  Hay, I'll play with anything.  I got the rest of my life to do what I want.

Went back in with the wife today.  She got some jewelry as usual.  I took in some skinning knives and had the guy with the sharpening booth put a razor edge on them.  Bought a shoulder holster for the wife to fit her Rugers.  Sold a Westernfield .410 pump that I have no use for.  Bought a 7.5 Carcano complete with bayonet to put in a shadow box and hang on the wall.  The only Auto Rifles were 30-06 or bigger.  The wife almost talked me into a .338 BAR, but I thought it had been treated rough and did not want to chance it not working properly once I got it home.

Did buy a big block of fudge.  Got to quite that, all that sugar in the stuff can kill you.

It's been awhile since I've been to a show, seems most of them were gearing it towards the mall ninjas with all of the sci-fi looking blades, etc. Wasn't even worth the price of admission, sounds like the ones up there are more down to earth. I do better hitting 3-4 pawn shops in a day.

I was at the Missoula, Mt, show last month.  This is at the U Of M field house 800 tables. It started in 1955 and is still going strong. Unlike many this is still a gun show not a flea market.

We had a Winter show at the same time not far away.  That is where the flea market folks went.  There was a few booths that sell jewelry, ran by wives of gun dealers who have the table next to them and we don't have a problem with that.  And the lady that sells the fudge, her husband sells ammo.  There was a few booths selling fur.  But most were guns, or gun related items.

I stopped going to gun shows here in CT when they became nothing but a military show. Literally 99% of all sellers had nothing but ex military things. GREAT for the military collector, but not a "GUN"show IMHO.

Not condeming them, they are just not my thing. Sounds like if I make it west, I will have to start going again!!  ::) ;)

Rog,
All the talk about the "last frontier" is making me anticipate my return stateside more and more. My branch assignment mgr told me to call when I get back to see about reassignment opportunities. It's a roll of the dice where I'll end up, but my own personal dice will always land on AK. ;)

Have you considered an AR chambered in 6.5 Creedmoor? I hear DPMS makes one that's scary accurate. Thos 6.5mm bullets are death on big game.

Thanks, Dinny

Dinny:  I have been considering one of those in 6.5.  Been reading about them, just have not gotten serious yet about looking at them.  I have a few friends that have ARs in .223 and 22-250.  I want something with a little more energy.  The 6.5 will probably give it to me.
