Bullet Seating 308 Win
« on: February 10, 2004, 07:42:56 AM »
Using a Stoney Point Bullet Seating Gauge I determined the OA length where the Nosler 150gt Ballistic Tip touches the lands.  I backed off .020 and want to use this length as a start to develope a load.  But at this length the shell will not fit in the magazine of my Weatherby Vanguard.  The Max OAL in the Sierra Reloading manual is 2.800 .  I am at 2.900 and if I use the former dimention, that would have my bullet .120 off the lands.  Is this reasonable?  Will this affect the accuracy potential?  Or does my rifle need to be rechambered?

Fit to the magazine

Seems like all the major gun makers do this. I have the same problem on my 700vs. I would just make them short enough to fit in the magazine. I didn't notice any difference at 200yds.

Same here with my Sako .308.  I just went a couple thousandths less than my magazine and they shoot fine.

For the sake of testing, set the bullet depth as you originally planned, .020" off the lands and handfeed the round.  Compare those to the magazine length rounds and see how accuracy is affected.  Seems as though Weatherby would not do anything to comprimise their accuracy ....but them dern corporate lawyers always have the last say????
