The Nightmare Model 7 is back!
« on: October 17, 2012, 08:25:55 AM »
Guys if you remember the Model 7 that would not shoot a group, back from having a Kreiger barrel fitted and everything straightened up. Shot some groups this past weekend and it shot a .391", a .422" group and a .536" group. All groups were 3 shot groups. The factory barrel was threaded crooked in the receiver and the crown was cut off. The gunsmith said the factory barrel was scrap. Happy days are here after almost $600.

I gather that Remington didn't own up to their QC.

BBF,
I did not even touch bases with Remington on it. From past experiences it would not have helped. I bought a Classic in 7x57 mm once, it shot about 3 to 3.5" groups and Remington said it was in SAMMI specks. I think that I have learned to leave Remingtons alone.

shamey-shame remington  :(   :(   :(

i'm guessing they're pocketing the profits
until nobody will buy a remington product
then a prc company will buy up the company
and tooling like the knife companies and all
the other american-based companies.

sad to read of these things. . . .

Ranger,
I paid $525 + 9.75% tax for the rifle. The plastic stock was trash, the rear action screw was taking all the recoil and the stock hole was elongated quite a bit, bedding compound will not take on the plastic stock so I replaced it with a HS Precision stock for $217+shipping. The barrel replacement + the fitting and gunsmith work amounted to $579 so you see I now have a whopping  $1385 in it. You can get so much in a piece of crap that you can't stop. Additionally I probably spent another $200 in components trying to find something it would shoot.

Ranger,
I paid $525 + 9.75% tax for the rifle. Found later that the rear action screw was taking the recoil and the plastic pos stock hole was getting elongated, bedding compound will not take on Remington plastic, so a HS Precision stock was $217. Thought I finally had it fixed, but not much improvement. Finally to the smiths for a barrel. They called about the barrel being threaded crooked. Another $579 and finally it shoot great. I probably shot $200 in components trying to find something/anything that would shoot. So I have a Model 7 that I have a whopping $1572 in. You can get so far in to something that you can't quit. Could have had a semi-custom built for that.

I have three Remington bolt actions.  The most accurate firearm I have ever witnessed is my 788, chambered in 6mm., and purchased new in the summer of 1980. It never goes over half inch with 85 grain Gamekings.

My other two are 700 BDL's.  The .243 came off the line in March of 1972.  The 30-06 in November of 1971.  They are both sub .75 inch guns, and always have been.

I much prefer the older rifles, and keep my eyes open when prowling gun shows.  I do cringe a little when walnut and blue gets wet in the rain, but they have always cleaned up well......besides, walnut is just prettier than plastic!

Good luck,

I don't blame you. There are others available without the hassle. I've got one Rem CF which is a 742 and it is only here because it shoots and operates even with low vel handloads flawlessly.

Well a gunsmith will tell you anything to make a buck.  I suspect there was nothing wrong with it.  Bad Remingtons are very rare.

I bought a Rem SPS Tactical .223 a couple months ago to use for coyotes.  The new trigger broke clean but won't go lower than 5 lbs.  The Hogue stock is too flimsy to put a bipod on as the weight of the forend pushes the stock up against the barrel (can you say not free floated).  It is a pain to load and as often as not the shell will not chamber as the bolt face cannot pick it up.

But with selected loads it will shoot sub 1/2" groups.  Would I buy another new one....probably not.  To pay for a new trigger/job and a decent stock I would just as soon pay more up front and not have the hassle.

I guess I've been lucky. I've owned a couple of dozen Remington centerfires, and have never owned a bad one. I always found they shot better glass bedded, and the barrel free floated, and I liked their triggers (after I adjusted them) better than custom triggers. I don't own any now, but am thinkin about it.

I bought a new 700 243 CDL in May of 2006.  I adjusted the trigger and worked up loads for it.  In June 2006 I had the action bedded and  barrel freefloated.  With the same loads that I had worked up the groups averaged at least 1/4" smaller after being bedded and freefloated.  Some averaged closer to 1/2" smaller groups.
Good Shooting,
George

Like I said, I've never met a Remington center fire I didn't like, but I got a Ruger Model 77 stainless a few years ago in 308 that printed 6" left at 25 yards regardless of scope, mounts, or ammo. Ruger sent me rings ect, but finally the rifle went back. Got it back two days before deer season, and killed a doe at 300 yards with it.
Ya just never know these days.

My mod 7 is and was a tack driver , right out of the box.  Eats any 120's 139's and 140's you want to feed it and accurate as all git'out.

It does start spreading out 5 shot groups using Fed Power shok 150's

Cor-Bon has a match 168 Grain I wanted to just try and see how they would do , but at just a little shy of 50 dollars a box I'm just not that curious.

The lesson I learned is that if it shoots poorly....sell it.  I've had about a dozen rifles rebarreled and tweeked.  All shot well after...except one.  I'm not doing the custom route anymore.  Glass bed, and trigger work OK...change the barrel...sell....

The most expensive rifle I got now is a mail order used Husky in 6.5x55 for close to 600 bucks. It needed another $ 400 in a new barrel and gunsmith fees to make it a shooter.

Okay guys, I've got to tell ya that this story, and the way it was handled, kinda kill me.

If in fact the barrel was screwed in wrong to the receiver, and the muzzle crown was cut off, all as  arrived from the factory, then I find it impossible to believe that had the rifle been mailed back to Remington, accompanied by a letter from a competent gunsmith stating these facts, that they would not have rebarreled it for free.  With a properly rebarrel rifle, slipped into a new HS Precision Stock, it would have shot fine.

Had Remington refused to replace the barrel, then you could have simply gone down to the Courthouse, and asked the Clerk to help you file a lawsuit in small claims court.   Typically, the suits are handwritten on a pre-printed form, and then filed in the court, for about $100.   A simple two sentence claim, such as ordinary and treble punitive damages, arising from  the sale of a defective Remington 700 rifle (serial no. _______), and commission of false representations in advertising, and violation of the Consumer Protection Act, will usually suffice.  As for triple the price of the rifle.

If your Court allows it, include a list of Discovery questions, that the defendant will be required to answer in writing, and ask them every relevant question that you can.    To serve the lawsuit, first find out the name and address of the Registered Agent for Remington in your state (Secretary of State's office), and if you can't find that, find it out for the Registered Agent in the state where their chief executive office is located.  If you can't find those addresses, then try addressing it to the Vice President of Legal Affairs at the address of their chief executive office.

With the name and address for service properly filled into the Complaint, the Clerks Office will typically send it by mail to the agent, and they will accept and sign for it, and it is thereby "served.".

Once this is done, you have a lawsuit filed against Remington, for about $100  of expenses, and I'll bet you will get a call from their legal department, asking you what it is about and asking to settle it.  If not, then show up on the Court date, and tell the judge your story in plain English.  Be sure to bring the receipt if you have it.  Be sure to bring copies of the advertisements, if any, that you relied on.   If Remington doesn't show up with a lawyer, you should win a judgment by default.  If Remington shows up with a lawyer, he will probably ask for a postponement and try to settle the case with you.

If you win by default, get a certified copy of the Judgment, mail it to Remington's legal department, and tell them that you are going to proceed to attach and levy against their accounts and assets wherever you find them.  You will get a call.

Why in the world would you lay out all of that extra cash, as you did, without first following these simple steps, that State law has enacted to protect you for this very purpose?  I swear you guys, you just seem to throw money down the hole like its trash.

   Manny

I agree with the others here! There was no reason for you not to send it back to Reminigton for them to fix it! If it came back and it wasn't fixed -then you turn around sell it back to your LGS where you bought it -Swear off Remigton and go your marry way!  Why spend $1350 on a rifle you didn't like anyway! Kind of stupid if you ask me!! :o  You said it came from the factory without a crown? And you didn't notice this before you bought it? Really?  Thats really hard to believe!!
