Sweet 30-30 & NC mtns. black bear

This week I have spent 3 days with a great group of western NC bear hunters. Yesterday I walked 8 miles thru the mtns. & mainly uphill both ways it seems staying in front of the dogs. Every hunter was toating lever action 30-30s with iron sights. There was one 45-70 lever gun. 2 hunters killed bears - one was 350#s & one was 370#s. Both bears were viscious to the dogs harming 7 different dogs and one had to be carried out. The bear last night was shot at 5 yards by a youngster with his 30-30. When the bear came around a rock ledge and saw the boy he said the bear laid is ears back & the boy then laid him out. Notice the hole in the shoulder done by the 30-30. Notice the fat on the back of this beast and notice the ground rooted up by hogs.

That youngster has a great tale to tell now!  And I bet the bear grows each time, as well it should.  He should be commended for keeping his head and making a good shot.

We are now up to 5 bears killed this past week.  I have lost 16 pounds in the last 3 weeks hunting.  This mtn. hunting is tough.

WOW!! my wife's grandparents live in franklin, nc. every time i drive over im looking to meet someone that will guide me with dogs! a bear with my handgun is my lifelong dream!! great job to the young man!

We now have shot 13 bears & 4 of which were shot just over the TN line.  You all have seen the weather reports in the mtns. from Sandy and we have been right in the middle of a blizzard.  4 of the bears have been over 300#s.
