Scoping the Mosin Nagant!
« on: October 17, 2012, 12:41:47 PM »
Well I did the stock last night and got her good. Bolt closes perfectly and down all the way. I was crapping my pants thinking that I was screwing something up by removing so much wood.  I will clean it up more and shape it better once I find some stain to "repair" the area that I worked on.

The "gap" due to the bolt hitting the wood that needed to be removed.

Done!

Now to find a 3/16" center punch and get the Rock Solid Industries mount drilled, tapped and installed!

Very nice job on the woodwork. :)  I'll probably go with the Rock Solid mount on my Mosin too... there's not much out there other than the RS and the crappy (in my opinion) ATI mounts. Let us know how it turns out.

I have scoped several mosins and tried the ATI, the rock solid and accumounts PU scope mount with split one inch rings. I actually had good luck with all 3 but the rock solid mount in my opinion is the best. I still have that one, I was lucky and got a timney trigger for it at a local gun show at a really great price. It will see use this season. After this season I am going to change the stock on it with a micro fit stock. If set up right a mosin is a very accurate rifle.

We're looking at a bullpup stock for it right now, but mainly just looking around is all. The factory wood stock is just to pretty NOT to use LOL.

Brass stacker has a scout mount that looks much more secure than the ones that take the place of the rear sight.  It actually goes around the rear sight and is see through so you can still use your iron sights.

UPDATE!!

1941 Mosin Nagant M9130 7.62x54  Its about equal to a .308

I mounted my scope on it as i shoot best with it, tried the bore sighter and got it on at 50 yards. After that we were just having a ball cutting bullet holes. The trigger is pretty stiff, i have not tried shimming it yet but if it shoots good at 100 yards, we are going to order the Timney trigger for it.

The mount and bent bolt cost more than the gun itself but hey, you want them accurate, its best to spend the $$ on the mount and get the right one.

well another update,

New medium steel Burris Zee rings. Today the new scope for her came in. KonusPro 6-24x50mm with illuminated dot. Love the scope! It will be a lot of fun for long range shooting.

Not sure whats up with the mismarked scope text that stands right out! It actually started a swearing war when i saw it! LOL. Must use the same parts for the 6-24 scopes.

Timney makes an aftermarket trigger with a side safety to solve both trigger and safety problems with this rifle.

Yep, the Timney trigger was ordered about 2 hours ago  :) Takes a bit of trimming on the stock and the bedding pillar.

bigblock455:  that is a nice looking job on that Mosin and with your Timney trigger it should shoot very nicely.  The 7.62x54R cartridge that rifle uses is more in the 30-06 range than in the 308 range, and as for accuracy - well buddy, the female Russian snipers who were fielded during the war, the Black Widows, used to say that shooting the German soldiers during the retreat from Stalingrad was like shooting matchsticks.  Ha!  Imagine shooting matchsticks with a rifle like that and in that power range - you'd never need anyting else.....
