A line on the sign that Gus carried to Montana. Anyone know the meaning or can anyone dirrect me to where I may find it?

When it gets time to pick you test by eating a grape if it is good they all are.

I've seen a few translations of that phrase but they all seem to convey the same idea about how when one fruit is ripe they all are or one fruit causes another to ripen.

what that refers to, .. by the action of one man in a group the others can be  judged.
 same saying as.. birds of a feather flock together.
so you can judge the bunch of grapes by the ripeness of one.

and i believe it to be middle eastern in origin ( arab  proclaimation )
