fix for pierced primers on 357 max Thank you!
« on: October 18, 2012, 12:07:03 PM »
Saturday I finally got out to the range. brought the new 45-70 handi rifle and the 357 max barrel. I've had nothing but trouble with the 357 on a sb1 shotgun frame. pierced primers, primers flattened, primer brass flowing back so the action is hard to open. None of these things were happy moments, i was about to give up. bought the 45-70 tried the 357 barrel on and it locked up pretty just like it came there. At the range fired 20 rounds loaded with trail boss in the 45-70 and then put the 357 barrel on without any sights just to test primer function. Was able to fire 38 spl +p, 357 mag loaded hot and 357 maximums loaded pretty stout but not yet topped out without any problems. Federal small rifle primers did flatten a little with some of the hotter loads but remington 7 1/2s did not. Thank you to all the guys on here for putting up with my questions and complaints and pointing me in the right direction to solve this very frustrating problem. No more centerfires for me on a shotgun frame! Thanks, again, Mike.

the 7 1/2 primers are a lot thicker material than the pistol primers.  Try the CCI BR4's or the CCI 450's.  The piercing you see may really be, what is called, Blanking, this is when there is too much room around the fireing pin which sort of cookie cutters out a little chunk of primer.  Normal fix for this is to bush the fireing pin, not so easy with a H&R.  Guess we did not fix the problem, but you may know what it is now.  Larry
