30 40 cat sneeze loads
« on: October 20, 2012, 07:13:34 PM »
I want to load up some cat sneeze loads for my 30 40 krag. I have some .311 round balls, once fired brass and some different pistol powders but I was wondering if anyone had and suggestions on which would be the best. Unique, trail boss or another kind.

What primers are you guys using large rifle?

And lastly is wadding of some sort necessary to keep the powder against the primer?
Thanks
Jw

I have done several variations on these in this and .45-70.  I find that longer barrels need about 8-10 gr. Unique and shorter barrels can go down as low as 5 gr.  I usually start low and work up.  Keep a ramrod handy though and make sure you run it through the barrel for each test shot if you cannot see for sure that it hit the target.  Another one that's supposed to be good for these is bullseye.  I use no fillers, wads or fluff.  Accuracy isn't perfect, but good enough to hit a woodchuck at 100 yards with my .45-70.  ;)

I use 3 gr. of Bullseye in my 30-06 with "0" buckshot lubed with Lee Alox. I point the barrel up before each shot and from a rest, shots make a single ragged hole at 50 feet. Velocity chronographed at 1300fps.

Some caution should be exercised when loading Bullseye powder for reduced loads. Double loads can ruin your day. That's why I prefer TB powder. I have used it to download my 30-30 and found it accurate and most enjoyable. Forget all about fillers and tipping your barrel up, TB doesn't need any of that stuff. I also will be loading some TB 30-40K loads someday in the future. ;)

Thanks, Dinny
