.17HM2 Single Shot Rifle????
« on: October 21, 2012, 01:09:32 PM »
I know H&R makes a .17HMR break barrel single shot, but what about for the .17HM2? I like the single shot aspect and love the cost of the HM2 rounds as opposed to the HMR.

So does anyone know if there is ANY company that makes a single shot .17HM2 Rifle?

Thanks,
-Evan

H&R did offer the 17M2, but like many other mfrs they discontinued it, all mfrs used to offer them, not sure who makes them any more.  :(

H&R made one, but hard to find.  IIRC someone picked one up or bidded for one on Gunbroker.  Check there, AuctionArms, GunsAmerica, Armslist, and put a WTB add over on RimfireCentral.  You never know what will turn up.

If i were to buy one off a website, would the seller simply send it to my local Firearms dealer? I live in California, we got some gummy laws.

Most private sellers and many dealers won't sell to CA buyers because of CA laws.  :-\

Sadly, thats what I was afraid of : /
Think I decided to just buy a H&R Sportster in .17HMR from the local sporting goods store anyway. The ammo still really isnt that bad compared to my .45-70 ammunition.

There is an HM2 barrel on ebay right now, but you have to watch the price.  Some of the people bidding on ebay get a little crazy.  Be aware that this barrel is only for the Sporter frames.

True, but its a bunch of BS!    ::)

I have sold complete modern rifles to non FFL buyers in CA, and they were no additional work or hassle at all for me to do so.   Buyer simply finds a local FFL that is enrolled in CA's Chicken Sheet program and will accept a rifle/shotgun shipped from a non FFL like me in another state.   FFL sends me a copy of his FFL and I ship UPS to that FFL myself.   Receiving FFL deals with CA's crap, I don't, end of story for rifles or shotguns.   The kink for me is handguns only.

It's not much extra trouble for a FFL to do the same, and they just use it as an excuse to gouge sellers with usually high extra fees.   I refuse to pay those jerk FFL's that will transfer to CA their high extra fees to do so... it's too easy to just do it myself.

I have no idea about CA's crap on firearms parts if there is any, but at the worst they could also be done the same way.

Yea, I was looking for an HM2 my man, but thanks for the try. I was actually deciding whether I should go with the Savage MK11 1.7 HM2 5 shot Bolt action, or with the H&R sportster .17HMR Break Barrel.

Suggestions?
The HM2 just fly slower right? Same grain bullets, just less powder and a smaller casing?

Here's a thought from over on Rimfire central..
     http://www.rimfirecentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=469979

  Note especially the last post which says;
" I had tfrank reline a savage .22 barrel to 17hm2. He did a fantastic job at a reasonable price and it's very accurate. If you want a reline job, get ahold of tfrank."

It looks like tfrank is a regular on the Rimfire central website..you can probably get him off the member's list, or jump into the thread shown and ask the poster how to contact jfrank..
Looks like you may be able to get the single shot of your choice relined..                                         Ironglow

Brownell's has the liners..I expect any good gunsmith with a complete shop could do the job:
  http://www.brownells.com/gunsmith-tools-supplies/barrel-blanks-tools/barrel-liners/17-caliber-rimfire-barrel-liners-prod25219.aspx

A couple nice base rifles for a .17 HM2 reliner..of course, there are many nice .22 single shots out there for a low price..

I have seen a few pop up. I don't think they are that rare.... At least not just yet.

I have 2!  They are THE MOST ACCURATE rimfire a I have ever shot!  I am not bragging but I have had the opertunities to shoot and buy some very hi $$ respectable accurate firearms! To say a 129$ rifle OUTSHOOTS THEM ALL ( so far) is HUGE!!

My worry is the ammo will be lost next so every time I am in a shop I but 100 rounds. ;).

Keep looking and you will find one before too long.

I know tfrank at RFC.  He's a helluva guy.  I took a trip to VA a few years ago to hunt with him.  I also owned a Mossberg that he relined to Hm2.  It was excellent, so much so that someone offered me $100 more than I paid for it so it found a new home.  If you are thinking that route, he can definitely do the work.  Whether he has the time to do it is different.  Give him a shout though, worst thing that could happen is he won't do it.

Stocking up is a good idea..and if worse comes to worse and ammo finally does run out, I suppose it could be rechambered to HMR.
The 17 gr HM2 and the 20 gr HMR (with only 300+ fps difference) should shoot well from the same barrel, if rechambering is necessary.

If a HMR barrel will bring $305, what is a complete NEF 17HM2 worth?  I like mine but if someone is that stupid, maybe.

I was lucky when I built my 17 HH and had two 17 HMR barrels. But pop did not and sacrificed his HMR to get his Fireball. I have been watching for a replacement.

Yesterday I decided to leave the Chrosman behind the door and pulled out the 17M2. ;) I put the smack on a Gray way at the end of the yard. Full 75-80 yards head shot! I was proud of myself. ;)
