For the 38-55 Fans... .410 Wads?
« on: October 23, 2012, 06:11:44 AM »
I was thinking about the Accelerator Sabots used in some .30 caliber centerfires to propel .224 projectiles waaay too fast and was looking over the reloading bench and came up with an idea.

Some .410 wads are in the 0.390" base diameter range, with plastic wall thicknesses of about 0.060" (leaving a nice ~0.270" hole in the middle).

Bore/groove diameter of the .38-55 is 0.373"/0.379".

I'm just sayin'....

Not actually sure the .410 wads are skinny enough--though some can be found in the 0.384" base diameter range.

It has possibilities.

The base diameter of the wad is important if you are muzzleloading.  For a cartridge load the import OD is measured around the petals with the bullet inserted.  Too small it will let the bullet fall out of the cartridge and too big and you can't chamber it.  I am think the 410 wad is probably too big for the 38-55 but I have never tried it.  I have used 410 wads for sabots in a 444M and 410 shotgun.  The initial results weren't so good but I didn't put any real time into working on a load.
