2012 IL Deer Hunt
« on: October 24, 2012, 12:45:13 PM »
Blue tongue, drought, & crossbow talk aside, I'm starting to gear up for our IL deer hunt. My main gun will be my Knight M-L, but I may just see what my Browning Gold with a slug barrel & Hornady SSTs will do. We will be just a bit North of Peoria. I'd expect the harvest to be coming along early this year.

I took it a little easy on the permits & have 2 anterless & one either sex. The trail cams had some good deer, but nothing in the true monster category. That's O.K., many years half the bucks never offer a picture 1st.

Looks like rather tranquil weather, 34/52 light winds & mostly sunny. Better than high winds & rain anyway, I would like a few more clouds. Here we come, about noon today. Good luck to all, be safe in those tree stands.

I did see a good sized 10+, he was much to far 300+ yrds, for any M-L shot. He never did work my way. I took a doe to tide me over til next season. I did see a good amount of deer, no 'shooters' in range though.

One guy got a nice 10 & the other a good 8. I did have a 9 ptr right under my stand, but he wasn't a shooter 9. One of the guys got 2 coyotes, the 2nd a buddy skinned for tanning. Over all a good hunt, easy weather & all went well.

I hunted down in Crawford county and took this buck early with the Super Black Hawk. The shot was right at 42 yds and the 240 gr XTP hollow point ahead of 24.2 gr of Win-296 Passed on through leaving perhaps a 3/4" exit hole. The deer, an 8 point, was not exactly a wall hanger but was a big thick bodied animal that easily hit the 200 lb mark.

Congratulations on a fine buck.

I like the idea of the 44 punching an exit hole.  Was there much internal damage?

I'm packing up again. I may use the Browning Gold for the 1st day over the M-L. Nothing wrong with my Knight, just trying something different.

I only had the day & a half. Maybe it was the full moon but daytime activity was down for us. I took this 8+ pointer, the largest anyone saw for the time I was down. I used my Browning Gold, Hastings slug barrel & a Hornady SST, worked great for the 50 yrd shot.

Another large coyote was bagged. They were skinning it when I left.

I've always said you have to hunt when able, maybe not always ideal conditions, rain, wind, full moon, whatever. Most of the deer we did see were milling about in thicker cover. Not the usual ones drifting across a field edge the 1st 1.5 hours of daylight & last 45 min of shooting light.  The moon was very bright.

I may have just one day worked out for the M-L weekend coming up, the wife doesn't even know yet. That would be down Friday morning & return Sat after 2 hours on the stand. I have some details to work out before it can happen though.
