Squirrel airgun hunting
« on: October 26, 2012, 10:30:00 AM »
Hello all,
I would like to hunt squirrel on private property using an airgun.  Do I need a permit to do this?

i'd have to say it would depend on
your state and county regulations
of the area you intend to hunt.

First are you talking permit for permission to hunt from landowner or hunting licence because of the weapon you are using?

I'm talking about a hunting license.  In Illinois I don't need a FOID card for my airgun, so I was wondering if I needed a hunting license to hunt with it.

Thanks!

I would say yes if the squirrel is a game animal in IL. Non game animals normally don't require a license but you need to check with the IL DNR.

Since this is a Illinois hunting forum, you need a hunting license and probably a fur bearer permit, and of course a FOID card? Not sure about the FOID card but just to cover all they might come up with, I'd suggest it.

You'll certainly need a hunting license. You'd need one of those if you were catching them by hand.

Hunting License & Habitat Stamp, unless it's your own property then Habitat Stamp only.FOID probably yes.  750fps Illinois considers it a firearm.  Probably wouldn't be an issue unless your a felon and then it very well could.ILHunter

Landowners do not need a hunting or trapping license on their own land in Illinois.  They do need Habitat stamp, waterfowl stamp if hunting waterfowl, deer and/ or turkey permits etc..

You should check if an airgun is legal. I thought it was a .22 or shotgun but I might be wrong

It is legal. A 30-06 is also legal. For squirell's a 22 or shotgun is more practical.

Shotguns make a mess of squirrels.
