Gun Show Question
« on: October 26, 2012, 02:24:48 PM »
I cannot remember the last gun show I went to, had to be years ago.  There's one about a half hour from me this weekend.  Do you ever find receivers at gun shows?  I want an old SB1 (or SB2) to learn how to do a trigger job and take a part and put back together.  My Handi's all function too well to take a chance screwing up.

I realize I could get one out of the classifieds, but my FFL requires transfer from FFL so heavy on fees.  Thought I may be able to find one at the gun show.

Odds are you can find a shotgun pretty cheap (offer less, everybody dickers, its part of the G.S. game) and have a whole gun when you are done with the learning curve instead of just a receiver (I suggest a 20ga. or even a 410).

Where are you located?  I ended up finding that the dealer with the best prices and least fees through Davidson's gallery of guns also happened to be one of the most decent FFL's around.  ;)  $25 bucks and he'll do as many as I want in 1 day.  ;)

You might be able to get a receiver from someone in your state. Very few people on here seem to want us to know even what state they are from ::)  I think I know of 4 that are within 20 miles of me and there's probably more. I met a guy a while back that had a box full of receivers, not sure if from my state or next door ;D

You can even put it below your avatar and/or in your profile ;)

Find a different FFL!! I shopped around using one of the FFL locators when my FFL retired, then the new FFL got sick and had to quit, found another that only charges $22, all local.

Go through Gander Mountain, they quoted me $85 ::)  I finally found one that's reasonable. A couple others are that price but all won't accept from Bud's and maybe a couple other discount shops. And last year they all went to only FFL to FFL. Hope mine don't read this ;D

I don't ever remember seeing any H&R receivers only at any gun shows but haven't been to them in a few years, except one a couple months ago. Didn't notice any then.

Every once and awhile there is a guy at the Lima show here that has Handi peices / parts , last show he had a couple shotgun barrels and maybe a year ago he had 2 frames = MINE NOW  ;D

But for the most part you just find complete guns , and most of those are older SB-1s shotguns .

I agree with Gcrank. I never even see common recievers at gun shows, let alone something as rare as a Handi. But you do occasionally see a shotgun sometimes for very little money.

Went to the gun show in southern part of central Indiana.  Wish I would have went deer scouting instead.  Saw several new camo stocked 44 mags at $400 (no scope or kiss). :o   Found a new $300 22Lr Sportster.  ???  My favorite was in one row on one end was a NIB 500 S&W for $240, on the other end was a NIB 500 S&W for $400.  I guess location is everything!  ::)  The guy with the $400 500 S&W was the one with the $300 dollar Sportster.  The cheapest used shotgun I found was a 410 youth for $140 in average condition at best.   I bought the same gun out of the used rack 10 years ago in like new condition for $50.  Bottom line is the most expensive retailer in my area has better prices by a lot.

The only interesting thing I found was a guy who is reaming 357 mag's to Max and selling them for IN deer, said he has reamed 35 so far.  He's a retired machinist/shade tree gunsmith.  What was interesting was he showed me his dummy round with the SSPB and he is loading it way out.  I load mine just below the cannelure, he had his another 1/8 inch out if not more.  He is also shooting 30grs of AA1680 (SB2 frame) which is max according to Accurate.  I'm not sure what the 30 grns gets, but will try loadging out farther.

Heading to the pawn shops...

Prices are one reason I quit going to the "shows" ::)  I did get some fair deals a couple months ago on some 444 and Max brass. Guy I worked with asked me to go, almost said NO. Quite a wide range on the 500s.
