Worker at northwest Indiana library discovers black powder gun hidden inside hollowed-out book  Published October 27, 2012
Associated Press    VALPARAISO, Ind. –  An employee at a northwest Indiana library found a gun inside a hollowed-out book donated to the branch.
The Times of Munster reported Saturday that police in Valparaiso are holding the gun as evidence.
 
Assistant Library Director Phyllis Nelson says an employee at the Valparaiso branch of the Porter County Public Library discovered the antique-looking firearm when she opened the book earlier this week
Police describe the weapon as a gold, wooden handled, 31-caliber, single shot, black powder gun.
Nelson says librarians have no way of knowing who donated the book. She says thousands of books are donated each month and no records are kept.
Police have determined the gun was not stolen.

My thoughts exactly.  Someone probably cleaned out the contents of the house of some old deceased relative not even knowing that the old gun had been stashed there decades ago.   Now some cop has just acquired a neat little trinket.

If its called evidence, that gives it a special status. Cops cant take it for themselves and the police department can sell it eventually.

I live 10 minutes from Valparaiso and have had to deal with these guys from time to time.  Ever wonder where I get some of my dislike about cops?  Valpo PD is one of the biggest influences for me.

The only remarkable thing in this story that I see is that it's being reported in a matter of fact way. Normally I expect things like this to be report something like this:
 
Librarian discovers terrorist cache of weapons of mass destruction. FBI and BATFE investigate. Suspects in custody, including 91 year old ring leader. SWAT team kills suspect's attack dogs and destroys her house.

Okay, they don't have to look any farther.....it's mine....I put it in the book....it was a mistake to donate the book so please return my pistol.....

We did a job in the Va. Museum once and while moving costumes in the thearter we found 3 ,38 revolvers  2 S&W and one Colt. They had been borrowed from the police dept. years before .   they were returned to the police.
