why bluing came off cyclinder
« on: October 28, 2012, 09:29:29 AM »
while shooting a new double action revolver using hand loads and lead bullets i noticed some caused smoke, i was using 3 different powders .only after about 75 shots i noticed bluing came off around the outside front of each chamber what is the most likely cause of this or could there be more than one ?I was thinking a bad seal or poor ignition but why would it make the bluing come off down past the front outside cornor of each chamber. thanks Bill

All revolvers bleed gas pressure from the barrel cylinder gap but it should not remove the blue. It may however be covered by fouling from the powder fouling and lube on the cast bullets. How was the revolvers accuracy?

after i cleaned the gun thats when i noticed bare metal. The gun shot a 3 in. grp. then shoot a 7 in. next time with the same load. not consistent  with any weight bullets, some time having a bad flyer just cant figure why the gases took the bluing off .

all of my revolvers have "gas rings".
unless the top strap is flame cutting,
i wouldn't worry too much. i've never
seen one that got regular exercise
that didn't, although i'm sure there's
a few that don't somewhere.

I would take a brass cleaning brush, soaked in a good powder solvent, and scrub the area in question.  My guess is that it is lead residue.  It looks like the finish is damaged, but probably isn't.  Lead residue like you describe is common with revolvers firing lead bullets, and can be difficult to remove.  It can look like bare steel, but isn't.
