45/70 Buffalo Classic accuracy with handloads
« on: October 28, 2012, 11:09:15 AM »
I am still fighting this no accuracy with handloads. I have tried the 'o'-rings. No help. I have tried cast performance bullets in the 300 and the 405. Shot buckshot size groups at 100 yards, actually buckshot would shoot better I believe. It has been cleaned with Bore-Tec Eliminator and has no signs of copper. What I shot yesterday was 40 grains of H-4895. All over the place! Any ideas?

Use the biggest dia. cast bullet that fits a fully fire-formed case neck that will still chamber up and extract cleanly. A cast bullet the same dia. as a jacketed bullet for the same caliber rarely shoots worth a hoot and even a proper throat size lead bullet forced into the undersized neck of a sized case may not either.
Use a powder charge that gets the bullet in the 1250-1400fps range.

First, I have found  that these guns are pretty sensitive to OAL, so make sure the bullets are pretty close to the lands. Second try from 32 to 36  gr of  IMR 4198.  :)

Sometimes it is a good idea to shoot some jacketed to find out what size groups it can make, but get them at about the right speed for lead. They are so much more forgiving and dont gas cut, then try to duplicate it with the right size lead.

I have yet to find a lead bullet load mine likes as much as jacketed.  I pretty much stick to the Hornady 350 gr. FP now and have great accuracy and plenty of knockdown and penetration.  ;)

Junior Doughty did a nice article on the .45-70 handi and how he got it to shoot with BP.  Might give some ideas.  ;)
