Sell me a new deer rifle
« on: October 28, 2012, 02:54:41 PM »
I have rifles capable of deer hunting, 45-70 lever, .325WSM bolt, .300WM bolt, and an AR in 5.56. Do you see what I see in that list? I figured you would.

I'm in Mn. swamp buck country, I'll overlook a slough or may be in rather tight timber, maybe a twenty some acre field. A .243 is pretty much unacceptable to me, would be as bad as owning a Chevy truck, could be a character defect. If the Marlin was flatter shooting I could live with it in bliss forever more.

Knock yourselves out fellas.

You should have asked this earlier.  I would have suggested you buy the 375 H&H barrel from RicMic ;)   Stoked with 300 grain nosler partitions it would have done anything you would have asked it to do with authority.

However you have a nice arsenal for the hunt this weekend anyway.  Bigger holes are better!  Take the ar to the PD fields IMO.

Good luck this weekend!

Long action .270, .280 or .260, 7MM-08 in short action, never owned one myself but the 7-08 seems to have a growing fan base. I prefer the plain old .270. I love that Bang! Whop! sound it makes.

You have heavy rifles, how about a 358 BLR?  Or 308 in BLR.  Then there is the 338 Federal or the 35 Whelen or 338-06.

Another vote for 358 or 35 whelen but I in a lever or a pump both fast follow up and lets lots of air in and blood out.

If not a Springfield M1A, how about a DPMS LR 308 or Rockriver Ar type 308.  Uses Magpul mags.  They also come with a 5 round mag for hunting where 5 rounds only are legal.  At least with 20 rounders, you can have a defensive weapon to boot.

I lean towards that 7mm08 ( and I see the .338Fed as a nice upgrade  ::) ).  What do the .25's offer? The 6.5's get plenty of talk but I just don't see many.

I've said it before I always find myself wanting more power than I might need. Witness:

30-06,  I have a .300WM. (Found a spent .30-378 Wby in Co. a couple weeks ago. Now thats a MAGNUM, I will never appoligize for my .300WM again.)

30-30,   I have a 45-70

I won the 325WSM, otherwise it would have been a .338WM. I wish the AR-15 was in 6.8 SPC. When I was avdly bowhunting I shot the 160grain Thunderheads as long as I could find them.

Keep em' comin'

 30-06

Is a caliber every American hunter should own
It has enough brass to pour plenty of powder
The .30 cal bullet with todays tech. can be had for
Varmint to Big game and do a great job on any
IMHO The 30 cal is the most versatile and used caliber
made for smokeless powder.
I also happen to have one for sale or trade  ;)

Thanks for the offer.

I think I can slow down the .300 WM to do about anything a 30-06 could do. That might well be the best answer as I love the way it carries, and shoots. A Ruger Ranch rifle in 6.8 intrigues me as does a new upper. A semi auto might be nice in the timber and the round has some legs for the sloughs.

Marlin 336 in 30-30, even if you have a 45/70 lever

The 1895 is my favorite rifle to carry. But what will I gain by going with a 336 instead?

flatter, much less expensive ammo... easy on the ears/shoulder/wallet, lethal on the deer. Plus, you'll have a 30-30! It's fun to tell folks you hunt with one, and then hear them lecture on how inadequate it is...

Had the 6.8 in the Ruger, similiar accuracy to the same rifle in .223, even with the newer tapered barrel. Liked the cartridge, rifle handles well but was not accurate enough for me. Went with an AR in 6.8, poly lower and 16" barrelled upper, plus it's Spec II so it will handle hotter tactical loads.

I'd recommend a 30-06, .308, or .270 for you.

You could buy a 6.8 upper for your AR.  Just 2 pin take down and you are ready to go.  Since it is swamp country, you could go with the 458 Socom or the 450 Bushmaster.  If you reload, same bullets as the 45-70.  You could also buy a 7.62x39 upper.  The AR platform is great for certain calibers.  Olympic makes an upper in a 25 WSSM which is about the maximum you can make out of the AR platform.  Saw an article where someone killed an elk with one at about 250 yards.  Ballistics are similar to the 243, but slightly larger bullet.  They also make a 243 WSSM.  That being said, the Winchester ammo is high and you would have to reload to get cost effective.  Winchester is working on a 308 WSSM from the same cartridge necked up and it gets 308 ballistics.  I personally like the 6.5 Grendel as the best all round AR caliber other than the 223, because it has very good downrange ballistics.

.308, 30-06 will do nothing nor offer anything my 300mag won't. I don't want nor need a black rifle that will do nothing nor offer anything my 1895 in 45-70 won't do. I have crap tons of killing power between these two and a .325WSM.

Researching this some, is there any reason to pick a 6.5 Swede over a .260 Rem ? As far as I can see the two are very similar in many respects, shorter actions being as big a difference as I can find. Right now the 7-08, .260, and 6.5 are neck and neck. The 6.7 has a real chance but compared to the three above seems short on reach for the money, and possible hassles.

kick less and use less powder than that 300  ;)  the 308 fits in a shorter lighter gun . And a black rifle can put more lead in the air faster than any bolt gun if the need ever came up but then how many times does one get over run with trophy bucks and enough tags to take 20-30 in one day ?  ;D  and who wants that skinning/cleaning  job ?  ::)

I usually find a rifle I like first then pick the caliber I like best that is available in that gun.  :o for instance I don't like bolt guns very well, so a 300WM is pretty much out of the question for me.

I just believe your going about this whole thing wrong, now go pick your gun.

You said a marlin and you would be happy...

Your leaning to the 7/08...

Have you looked at at the custom 7mm STE? Basically a 307/7mm or 7/08 rimmed chambered in a Marlin lever action 336.  I have a story in a older shooting times I can scan and send you in interested...  ;)

Ooh that seems like a lot of effort. You must be a gunsmith, or get discount rates. I'm too danged cheap for much in the lines of custom. I do appreciate those guns, but not quite enough to pony up the money.

Would that be all that different than the 7 Waters? At least I could convince myself it was a normal chambering.

I am certainly open to a BLR in 7-08.  I have narrowed this down to the 6.5 x 55, or 7mm-08 as the most likely. Since it will in most likelyhood be used, I have to be open and knowledgable about several others though. In a perfect world it'll be a M-70 Featherweight in 7-08 finely figured wood for $350 with a 2 X 7 VX III Leupold for an extra $50.  ;D

The new 260 Remington is a 6.5 based on the 308 case, yet has a higher pressure rating than the 6.5x55.  A DPMS LR-10 is made for the 243, 260, 7mm08, 308 and the 338 Federal.  20 round mags are available.  Can get a 5 round hunting mag, and can serve as a SHTF weapon.  I've read they are very accurate, can be scoped, or whatever accessories you want to put on them.

22-250 is too similar to the 223
25-06 is a flat shooter, hits hard
270 works well, easy to find
6.8 SPC is a great round, ammo expensive and hard to find
7-08 is the clear winner, shoots flat, hits hard, ammo easy to find

I am thinking a 308 MX light quick handleing . good in the timber ,but also has the reach for the 20 acre field. And quick follow up shots with a lever action cant be beat.
