Nef or Rossi in 243?
« on: October 28, 2012, 03:24:51 PM »
Hi, I am giving thought to getting one of these rifles.
Any thoughts or preferences between the two? Lightest most accurate etc.If I get one I will be putting a 4x Leupold on it.
I am just interested in a Lightweight ,short accurate rifle for deer hunting .
Thanks
Craig

I hate to even mention it, because I am a dies -in-the-wool Handi-Holic...
Have you looked at the CVA Scout? The local candy store has a .243 compact in stock. Better trigger, locks up tight feels great. And it costs less than the handi.

My daughter has a Rossi 243. What little I shot it I was not impressed. My only Handi, a 22/250, impresses me very much. The Rossi looks cheap compared to the Handi especially how the forearm stud is attached. The Rossi has a sling  loop whereas the Handi has a stud. The loop makes sling removal difficult say in a treestand. The Rossi also has a safety which I don't believe is neccessary on a hammer gun. I've been looking at a synthetic Handi in 243 at a good price. It looks good and locks up solid. If it were me I would lean towards the Handi.

The Rossi stock leaves a lot to be desired.  The only caution that I would mention is that it takes a little work to get the .243 Handi to shoot the way it should.

I know you asked about a .243Win., but IMHO, if you want a great accurate Handi for deer hunting right out of the box, get the 30-30.  I don't know why, but they are super accurate, I have two, both assembled from barrels I purchased from members here.  They shoot 1" groups at 100 yards with 150 grain Winchester Silver Tips.

My quandary, I personally, don't think I have enough Handi's but, I know I have more Handi's than I really need or should have.

I have never heard of the scout or I forgot it !
I am sure the 30-30 would work but I really like the 243 performance on deer and it offers more range assuming I can get the rifle to shoot.
The Super light looks good as it is lightweight and short and I can change barrels (dont know if I would ever use that feature)
I like the concept of short ,light and accurate.

I have both .243 and 7mm-08 in Handi Superlights.  I love em.  I believe the Handi .243 accuracy problems are a thing of the past.  I think they've got that fixed.  Both of my 20 inchers are tack drivers.  For deer, I'd go with the 7mm-08.  More clout at longer range.  My .243 is my dedicated control permit wolf rifle.

you know you might want to look at the 25-06 hand. I know you want short but over all length is the same as a standard 22 inch bolt gun. You can load it with 100 grain bullets with the same recoil as the 243 with load development or step up to heavier full house loads for a bit extra distance and power
