Or do you pick up other rifles like a marlin or sharps in the 45-70.

Have an H&R Officer's Model trapdoor, a "sporterized" original trapdoor Springfield, and a Ruger No. 1 as well.......shoot the Handi's most often.

No interest in the Sharps and Trapdoors, they are either too expensive or too dang old to be safe too shoot.

I would like an older 45-70 marlin lever gun and will probably get one when I find one for the right money.

I would also like one of the 45-70 Mauser bolt guns but the prices have went nutz on them lately so probably will not happen.

Best of all would be a 45-70 Dbl Rifle, but they start on the big side of $700 for a russian/eastern european gun and go way higher than that for a really nice one. Guess I will have to be content with my Profino 45-70 Dbl Rifle.

I would take a double 45-70 today in a heart beat. Since I goten
into the handi's all the big bore levers have been sold. I have no regrets
so far of selling them. When ya are hunting you usually only get one
good shot an that is the first.

I have a Browning BPCR that's a boot to shoot!! I also have a couple Marlins that I like allot. But the handi sees more use

No, I also shoot a Win 1885 Highwall, and a Win 1886 Take Down, both in 45-70.
Thinking of building a Win model 70 in a 45-70 and would also love a nice Double Rifle in that cal.

45-70s are like tater chips....can't have just one.

Snuggled in the gun vault we have a Pedersoli 1874 (Sharps replica), a Browning 1886 carbine, a Marlin Guide gun and of course the H&R Handi.
As much as I enjoyed shooting my friends 45-70 double rifle, I was not impressed with it's price tag nor it's poorly regulated barrels and inadequate sights (least for my eyeballs anyway). YMMV

I shoot a Handi most of the time when I use a 45-70. I also have a H&R Springfield Calvery Model Trap Door 45-70. I sometimes use this gun when hunting Bears or Moose.

I also own an original Springfield 45-70, that I shoot every year or so. I killed my first Moose with it back in 1972 when I first found it under an old fallen down cabin. The gun was wrapped in oil cloth and hidden under the floor logs of a big cabin. I found it with a metal detector back in 1972. Took it home and cleaned it up. It was in good shape except for the very end of the barrel that had broken out of the oil cloth and had surface rust. Had a gunsmith check it over and he said it was shootable. I bought a box of shells for it and went out and killed my first Moose. Still have it along with the bayonet that was on it when I found it. It is an Infantry model with a long barrel, and pop-up adjustable sights.

I also have a 45-70 Marlin Guide gun in Stainless steel. I usually have my son or someone else use it as back-up when I am using a Handi or TCR for hunting Big Bears.

I am currently using me 45/70 Handi rifle as my close to medium range deer rifle out to 300 yards. It is among the most accurate rifles I own and being able to precisely place a 350 gr bullet makes it a very good choice for woods range hunting. I also have an old Mauser rifle that has been rebarreled to 45/70 by Navy arms. While I do like it, it is simply not as accurate as the Handi. I will eventually have a nice Marlin with the laminate stock, and of course the BFR 45/70 revolver will go nicely as a sidearm. I love this old cartridge and will always hunt with my single shot.

A friend has a reproduction 45-70 but one like his is out of my price range, but I wanted one and settled for a 45-70 Handi version.
It's been my favorite rifle and one of the reasons I got into handloading. It puts 400 grain Speer jacketed bullets into an inch and half all day long at a hundred yards. I also like to load up lead 405 grain bullets over TrailBoss powder for plinking fun shooting. I loaded up some stout loads that were accurate also, but not much fun to shoot so I put them away for a rainy day.

I've looked at several levers, but I have a 40-60 Marlin original 1881, so it seems somewhat surperfluous as a need, but I'll probably get one some day in .45-70.

that is a 7.5 ruger 44 with it

no, besides my Handi Rifle 45/70 i have two trapdoor rifles, one is a H & R Officers model and the other is a Pedersoli Infantry model which has a 33 1/2 inch barrel. Uncany how accurate the Infantry model is with a 500 gr round nose bullet that i cast from a SAECO mold and 26 grs of AA 5744 powder.

I started with a Handi 45-70, went to a Marlin Guide Gun. Got rid of the GG, bought a Pedersoli Rolling Block and another Handi 45-70. Bought a barrel for my Encore in 45-70, did some selling and trading now have a Ruger 1S, an Encore and a Rolling Block all in 45-70. I do miss the Handi 45-70s, may pick one up some day if the opportunity presents itself.

I like my H&R Ultra Hunter SS with the scope, but it is not acceptable for any 'vintage' type rifle shooting, so a nice low mileage 1884 Springfield 'TD' fills that bill. The H&R has more shots out of it for me, but TD level loads work fine in both so its 'grab & go'. If a levergun or No. 1 came along at the right price it would be awfully tempting, but not really serve me any better. I might just be smarter to get a BC, though that TD (that is the stronger upgraded model) makes the BC redundant.

Sold the 45-70 handi to get my 1884 Dantish rolling block, also have a marlin lever, 2 trapdoors,am building a mauser in 45-70. the handi just mwasn't what I wanted in a 45-70

I'd love to try it but think i might drive myself nuts looking for the right size bullet, etc.

I have a scope on my 22" barrel with a QD Leupold mount. I have to say this gun is a 1971 mfg and has conventional rifling. I just had it out a couple weeks back.

I like Speers 400g bullet and 4198 powder. I load them pretty hot at 1900 fps and they shoot very well!

This was last three shots at 100 off the lead sled;

"Damn respectable" as my pop put it.

Contrary to popular mythology and internet nay'ers the Micro-Groove barrels will shoot cast bullets with accuracy. Usually it is mostly using a bullet that fits the throat; many try using too small a dia.cast bullet (like the same size as the jacketed bullet for the caliber) and do poorly. Bigger is better than smaller by a long shot

Got the .45-70 in handi-rifles, BC classics, Marlin 1895's, Ruger #1's, Remington rollers, and an original
trapdoor. It is one of my favorite calibers.

I have the H&R in 45-70, an original 1876 Springfield trapdoor. a Siamese Mauser. a replica of the Sharps. All shoot well and all are unique.
