35 CAL .358 DIA 180 GR SP SSP IN .357 MAXIMUM ?
« on: October 30, 2012, 07:02:56 AM »
Does anyone have any experience loading and shooting the 35 CAL .358 DIA 180 GR SP SSP bullet in a .357 Maximum Handi Rifle ?

I realize the .357 Maximum calls for a .358 diameter bullet; however, I really don't want to create a dangerous pressure situation using this jacketed bullet. I would most likely load it over 20.0 grains of H110

So, what say the experts ?

I use it with Lil'Gun with no signs of excess pressure. There is published data for this bullet in the 357 max so it's definitely useable although I haven't seen any published data for H110 yet.

+1 on the Lil' Gun.  I'm shooting the SSP at 2150 fps. very accurately with no signs of pressure.  I can PM you the load if you're interested.  It comes from a very reliable source.  I've got a bunch of XTPs to shoot up, but I think I'll load them in mags for my Blackhawk.  I like the SSP much better.

I appreciate the responses.  I thought I'd check before I turned my Handi Rifle into a Blunderbuss.  :)

Pete,  I'd really appreciate the load data if you'd PM it to me.

Thanks !

I've loaded some of that particular bullet, and was getting flattened primers at 20 gr.  I am now at 19 with H110.  I would back off just a bit and work up for safety sake....

Yup,
NO WORRIES shooting any .358 dia bullet in the MAXI. (Or mag for that matter) BUT watch published (OR trusted) data.

I (Many other folks too) find AA1680 produces excellent velocity, energy and accuracy for these bullets.

My own loading is now considered "'Lite" (Its max in my barrel) at 26g with a 180 SSP seated to the cannalure. BUT I get near 2300fps form a 21"tube.

Good luck,
CW

I'' ll jump on the AA 1680 bandwagon. Tried Lil gun, IMR 4227, H110 and get the best groups and velocity with AA 1680 using 180 grain Remington JHP or Hornady 180 XTP. I've laid up a stash of the SSP 180 as Midsouth has them on sale. Going to load some and get them to the range and get groups and chronograph data sometime soon.

I'd be very interested in what your results are with the SSP bullets from Midsouth. I plan on ordering some as well.

I loaded this bullet with 25grains of Reloader 7.Shoots great but does have a tendency to disintergrate at higher speeds when you hit a hog!

I agree, I too have found this to be true.
