Attention Recoil Junkies
« on: October 30, 2012, 07:31:53 AM »
I know it may not be a 45-110, but it is still an experience to shoot:  My 50 Alaskan Classic Carbine.  50 Alaskan was developed to stop Kodiak brown bears and as a round that would still cycle in a converted Marlin Guide Gun.  It makes a very interesting round in the Handi.  Here is a photo of a dummy round I sent to Wayne York so that he could tailor my chamber to my handloads next to a 45-70 round with a 300 grain jacketed hollow point.  400 grains is a small bullet for the caliber, which is a true 50 caliber (0.510-0.512) as opposed to the 500 S&W (0.500).  The 50AK dummy is loaded with a Cast Performance 435 grain WFNGC.  Talk about a big medplat!!

If you're gonna carry a single shot, might as carry one that is going to kill something! (If it doesn't kill my poor old shoulder first.... :( )

The Alaskan is a very nice lever gun loading!!

I had the opportunity to work with a rechambered Marlin in this caliber. I worked up and finally made some loads for a friend that flies in Alaska some years back. I used a 400 something grain bullet, cast hard with a lot of Lino and quenched. ( I made the bullets too. His mould). Man those thumped your shoulder!! ::) It took him some time to manage it! We had to start with my own guide gun in 45/70 because he flinched so badly shooting. The 50!! ;) Eventually he was able to consistancy snap shoot a softball at 50' under stress and pressure.

BTW, the 500 IS a true 50 caliber@ .501. ::)
A better way to describe the 500S&W might be to say, It's a bastard diameter compaired to other more common/existing 50's.

It is a tremendous powerhouse as a stopping caliber in a good lever!!

Geez, Tim.  You are a gluton for punishment!  I had a choice between the Alaskan and one of the 50 Sharps, but the thought of a Sharps in that little gun scared the pants off me.

If I was going to shoot anything that abusive on my shoulder I would have a gunsmith install a high end muzzle brake on it.  These take a considerable amount out of the recoil.  I used to have a .308 with a huge ugly muzzle brake on it, and shooting it was like shooting a .223 with no muzzle brake.

Also that's how the .50BMG is tamed down to 12 gauge recoil levels in rifles.

Plus if nothing else if you miss the blast should be so attrocious it should scare the bear away. lol

It wasn't bad with weight in the stock rested in a Leadsled DFT, not until I got about half way thru my loads or so anyway, then it started hammering me!  ;D

How fast could the Alaskan shoot surplus 50 BMG bullets?
