  Next Slide Previous Slide   The popularity of the reproduction Mustang body shells, including one for the 1965 Mustang Convertible and another for the ’67 model, has prompted Ford to approve yet another reproduction of one of its most cherished models, this time a 1940 Ford Coupe hot rod. Like the previous Mustang reproductions, the new Ford Coupe comes just as a shell, either with its doors and hood attached or without them should the customer desire.

It is constructed of high-strength steel and is assembled using modern welding techniques. The shell also comes fully rustproofed from the factory and is ready to be assembled as a custom hot rod or as a faithful tribute to the original.

The shell is available with a stock firewall that accommodates the original flathead V-8. However, for those looking to use a modern powertrain, it can alternatively be ordered with a recessed firewall that will allow much larger engines to be installed.

You’ll find that in addition to owners of original 1940 Ford Coupes looking to do some restoration work, there are many in the performance scene looking to build their perfect hot rod from scratch, which this shell would be ideal for. Thankfully, there are licensed versions of all the necessary parts as well.

The shell is available now for ordering through Dennis Carpenter Ford Restoration Parts, though it doesn’t make its official debut until next week’s 2012 SEMA show. It is priced from $11,900 for the basic model and ranges close to $15k once all the panels are included.

The story of the how 1940 Ford Coupe reproduction came to be is an interesting one. Dennis Carpenter, the man behind Dennis Carpenter Ford Restoration Parts, originally was having trouble locating a good used set of dash knobs for a 1940 Ford Coupe he was restoring--and still owns--so he approached Ford and obtained permission to reproduce the knobs using original factory blueprints and designs. This was more than 40 years ago, and since he then he's expanded the number of parts licensed by Ford, including this entire shell.

I've seen inside the engine compartments of cars of that type and era. You could actually climb into the engine compartment and stand next to the engine to work on it. There was that much room. All you had to do was remove the air filter housing.

It sounds like heresy, and I'm a Ford guy... but if I were building one of those things, I'd prob opt for one of GM's LS2/LS3 motors. I think LS series engines are just grand... no overhead cams req'd.

My brother had an original 5 window coupe with a Dodge Hemi in it back in the early 70's.   Unfortunately it was lost in a fire.

My mother had a car of that type, but made by Packard. Straight-8 engine. Very nice car for the 29 cent a gallon gas era.

Did any of you guys see that episode of Pawn Stars where some guy came in and had the complete original body to a Shelby Cobra ? And the crying shame was that he got it out of a storage building
that someone had stopped paying the storage on years ago.  Now you talk about a real car, one of those would be one of my absolute favorites that were ever made!

It sounds like heresy, and I'm a Ford guy... but if I were building one of those things, I'd prob opt for one of GM's LS2/LS3 motors. I think LS series engines are just grand... no overhead cams req'd.

My bother has one of the newer Impala SS models that had the LS1 engine in them. In the preferred black paint of course.  But he bought that car new back in 1996 for 25k, drove it for years and it is still worth 25k.

If he bought it in 1996, it was the fat one with the LT1 motor. I had a 95 9C1 Caprice - cop version of same car, same engine/suspension & the LT1. Fast and good-handling for a big car, but a maintenance pig, at least in my experience... OptiSpark probs, in addition to a slew of others. It was my last fast (well, semi-fast) car.

 I bought one of the last green 1995 Impala SS's available that year. When one of the guys I worked with drove up in his new maroon 1996 with a floor shifter (the 1995 had it on the column) a few months later, it was all I could do to keep from hitting him over the head and taking the keys.
